San Juan Beaches
Does anyone know any really nice beaces within an hour's taxi ride of the piers in San Juan? We are supposed to arrive quite early, around noon time, and our boat doesn't sail until 11 p.m., so we were thinking of trying to get to a beach that day. But we wanted something tropical, not backed by too much development, with palm trees, etc.--does anyone know if this exists this close to the city? Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: San Juan Beaches
Try Luquillo ... it is beautiful.

But can be crowded.

Thanks Pam: I will look into Luquillo. I had heard of it and will also ask our friend from Puerto Rico Ricardo what he knows about Luquillo. Happy Holidays.

Re: San Juan Beaches
I haven't been there myself but heard that the beaches in Dorado are beautiful (the taxi driver we had on our last cruise out of San Juan told us this). We stayed at the Condado Plaza Hotel and the beach there was nice but not great. The beaches along the Condado strip are OK too but not top notch beaches.

Re: San Juan Beaches

Visited Luquillo the week before Christmas. Wasn't the best. Beaches on the Atlantic side seem to be kind of rough and subject to cloudy and rainy "Northside" weather. If you have the time, the ferry from Fajardo to Culebra Island ( the Caribbean side and Tampico Beach ) is a bit warmer and more inviting. It is a half-hour ride and costs a couple of bucks. Departs 9:30 AM Monday-Friday and 9:00 AM weekends. Returns 4:30 PM M-F and 5:30 PM weekends. Doublecheck the times, if interested: 787-863-4560.
