I was thinking of future vacation plans and looking at past vacations. I have spent time at Sheraton bal harbour in Miami which is on the ocean and also at Daytona Beach. The ocean was very gray looking and while I enjoyed those trips - I enjoyed the water in the pool better.
So my stupid question -why is the Atlantic ocean so much prettier the farther south you go in the Caribbean?
It can't be a stupid question, you are smart enough to ask, rather than make up something like everyone else.
Clarity and coral formations...... You can't see your hand in front of your face off either coast. The waters of the Caribbean are so pure sunlight penetrates nearly 100 feet in places. Coral formations lose color definition without lots of light, that's why underwater photographers have to use flash. We learned to dive living in the Caribbean. Spoiled us for anywhere else. Same thing in the Pacific islands. If you live there you never get tired of it. Never mind why the waters off our coasts are so murky.
The coral actually filters the water wich makes it clearer. also the coral reefs are a barrier to waves which keeps sand and silt from being stirred up which leads to clearer water and better visibility. Deep water found offshore is always blue because there is not much particulate matter in it.
