Default Panama Canal rate hikes?

From www.maritimematters.com

Panama Canal Rate Hikes?
"July 23: A proposed additional $20-per-passenger charge for of the Panama Canal toll could prompt cruise lines to consider deploying their ships away from the Panama Canal, according to press reports. A rate hike, if it is imposed, would take effect in October. "

Can you say "Increased Port Charges"??? Excuse me, I guess they are "Passenger Tariffs" nowdays. I'd be surprised to see ships bypassing the Canal though.

Default Re: Panama Canal rate hikes?

Ships going to and coming from Alaska season have little choice but to transt the canal.
Other ships that go through the canal as part of any other itineraries are not going to have a problem disguising $20 somewhere in a $2000 cruise fare.
