They are kind of hard to describe. They slip on with a mesh top and rubber soles. You can buy them at any discount store - I have seen them at Wal-Mart, Kmart, Target and even Walgreens. At these stores they run between $5.00 and $6.00. I have also seen a larger selection at Sports Authority - running as much as $30. Hope this helps!!
Sometimes also referred to as Aqua Socks . Might be hard to find this time of year as
most stores are putting out winter coats and halloween decorations already . Shoe department of any mass merchandiser (Wal Mart , Kmart etc) or catalogs like Lands End and LL Beans also carry them.
You wear them if you don't like squishy unrecognizable ocean floors or if there is a risk of stepping on coral or sea urchins. Macho people don't bother with them, smart people do. Should be mandatory for kids.
Got our water shoes/aqua socks at Walmart for under $6.00. We snorkeled for the first time without them, NEVER again. With the rocks it was unbearable with tender feet.

You wear the old worn out (free) sneakers when you simply don't want to step on the bottom in your bare feet. The aqua socks are just that, thick neoprene socks that you can wear to protect your feet while wading or wearing fins. They will help prevent blisters if the fins don't fit. Come in handy when water skiing for the same reason. Recommend wearing something, you can really get your feet sliced up if you venture beyond a prepared sandy beach.
Just went out tonight and bought them. They are ugly but hey rather have them just in case. Everyone has been given me such great ideas. Leaving next Sunday on Carnival Paradise. Well I guess I will try and get those ugly shoes on if needed.
