If there is any political unrest or, even weather related problems, cruiseships will not take any chances and will re-route the cruise, must be something up there I would think? At least in this case they are substituting a port, thats sometimes nice, although a "sea" day is as well. You never know when things change, they could go back there. I know we had a cruise that was supposed to stop in Haiti and that was also cancelled, but at the moments its a safe stop. Good luck with your cruise, hope you do get to see all the islands you wanted to :-)
Celebrity and Princess not stopping in Cartegena is not new (and at least in Celebrity's case not temporary). The problems are many in this very beautiful historic port city with over 500 years of history. There is of course the ever present drug problem in Columbia. In addition after the most recent presidential elections there is political unrest that has manifested itself in significant violence.
If you get a brand new Celebrity catalog , Cartegena is GONE. Not mentioned on any itineraries. There were no major (at least publisized )tourist incedents, but, it is simply no longer a safe place to go. It is a wonderful and fabulous city, unfortunately one no longer safe for tourists. I believe Columbia is now on the State Dept list of places it is not safe to visit. We have 3 native Colubians in our office. They and their families feel safe in their local communities when they visit home, but none of the three would dispute the fact that Cartegena is not safe for cruise tourists.
