Default glasses or contacts when snorkelling

Hello all!

Never really snorkelled before but willing to try...slight problem though!

Do you wear contacts or glasses when snorkelling? Will the masks
be waterproof enough that water won't seep in?

Thanks in advance!

Glasses can't be worn under a mask as a seal cannot be made. Contacts are fine. Disposable contacts are good to use just in case for whatever reason, the lenses are lost. You're not out too much $ with disposables.

The glass in a mask magnifies everything, so unless you're quite nearsighted (like me), you might try it w/o contacts. If you do much snorkeling at all you can invest in a mask with your prescription in the glass lens. Keep in mind, especially with hard contact lenses, that you might get a little salt water in your eyes just taking the mask on and off. This can causes tearing of course, which might float your lens out of your eye.

Soft, disposables IMO are the way to go, or a prescription lens in your mask.

I specifically went & got contacts when we went to Cancun 3 years ago just for that purpose. I can't wear contacts normally but can wear them for short periods of time, so I have each time we have snorkeled. I think if I did not have them it would be difficult to enjoy the beauty of snorkeling not being able to see anything.

if you wear contacts and can't see withouth them, invest in some disposable lens, if you wear glasses/contacts and can see ok without them, (like me i have an astigimitisim sp?) i was able to see all the marine life without my glasses. You can't wear glasses under a snorkel mask.

Hi Bill,
I now wear contact lens, and I would wear them snorkeling, think I've been lucky, have yet to have any fall out. Hope you all enjoy snorkeling, its really quite amazing, especially if there is a lot to see, have fun!

A couple other considerations:

If you have a mustache, you'll need some vaseline to help get a good seal around your mustache.

If you snorkel a lot, you might consider getting a prescription dive mask. Yes, you can get prescription lenses built into the snorkel mask. It may be a little expensive, but it makes seeing much easy. Here are a couple web sites you can use:
http://www.prescriptiondivemasks.com/

I hope that this helps.

I wear glasses and I can't see without them. I take the earpieces off of an old pair of glasses and set them inside the mask when I go snorkeling. It has worked out pretty well for me and there is no cost. I hope this helps!

Gram wears contact lenses when snorkelling. Snorkelled dozens of times and never had a problem with the lenses. I wear prescription mask. COST? The price of a good mask plus $30 to $40 per lense. The world underwater is too beautiful to miss anything. Many snorkel tours now offer presciption masks .
They will give you the nearest presciption to your own (just below your correction).
Whatever you do, go snorkelling.

One of the best series of advice I've seen on the message board.

Either the new goggle type or old full face mask should solve the mustache issue. If the Brits in their underwater forces can stuff a full beard into one, so should you.

My first snorkleing trip, I did what Jean does, stuffed an old pair of glasses into a mask. My loving wife bought me a perscription mask and I was hooked. Now I dive as well as snorkel.

I used to wear contacts, but never got the hang of it. What would a pair of disposable ones cost? If you perscription is not too complicated, you can get a mask for about $90 with lenses.

Being the nice guy I am, I bought my wife a perscription mask, snorkel and fins for Valintines day 2 years ago so she would have them for our next trip.
