Default St. John - ferries, cabs, jeep rentals

Anyone out there done St. John on your own? After having gone there on tours (to Trunk Bay) about 3 or 4 times, we'd sort of like to rent a jeep and explore a bit. Esp. interested in finding other good snorkeling spots. Anyone know the time it takes to get to Red Hook by cab? The price? The price of the ferry from R.H. to Cruz Bay? There is supposed to be a ferry to Cruz Bay right from Charlotte Amalie. Anyone know anything about it? Or have you taken it? Is all the hassle worth it, or should we just go someplace else new - Sapphire Beach? Coki Beach? (Saw Magen's Bay long ago. Was a partly cloudy day but the beach seemed rather dirty and not what we had expected. This was even before we'd ever seen Trunk Bay, too!) Our other idea was to take an independent snorkeling excursion but can't find any l/2 days ones where the times would work.
