I am planning on travelling to the western Caribbean in August 2003 on Carnival Cruise Lines. Any thoughts on the weather during this time? Has anyone experienced a hurricane while on a cruise? Is there anything that we should be aware of so that we still have a fantastic time?
Hot and Muggy on the islands,(90+ degrees) hot with a nice breeze on the ship. Yes in August you run the risk of hitting a hurricane, the ship will go around the hurricane, you may miss a port and run into some rough seas and rain if there is a hurricane stirring around.
As Lisa said there is a nice breeze on the ship, so you don't really notice that it is so hot. Maybe it depends on what excursion you choose, but we didn't notice the heat all that much on shore either. There was a tropical storm in the Gulf when we went. The ship went right on schedule. It was a little rough one day, but we had a ball anyway. The only complaint was that when we tried to inquire about the tropical storm, Carnival would only say "No problem. It's O.K." Even though we knew everything would be O.K., we just wanted some info. It was irritating to not be able to get that info. We finally went to the internet cafe and paid to check the weather reports for an update on the storm.
