Nassau is a very easy island to tour on your own. Just walk out of the pier area to the main street where you will find the Horse & buggy tours and the Taxi vans. Take a taxi @ $4pp each way over to Paradise Island and get off at Atlantis. You can take a great tour of the Dig the man made aquarium and grounds for $25 pp if you like. I also understand (am not positive of this) that they offer a day pass for $25pp now. This is a great way to spend the day exploring while you are in port.
When last in Nassau we stayed out at Cable Beach for 4 days. We took the bus into town and were taken through local neighborhoods and back streets as the bus approached town. I have never been anywhere else where the school children greeted the bus driver with friendly "hello Mr. Driver" and even the adults paused briefly to thank the driver for the ride. Reasonable care should be excercised wherever you go , but generally speaking Nassau is a safe and enjoyable port. To get to Atlantis you can take a cab (just a few dollars) or better yet , at least one way take the local "water taxi's"
available at waters edge near the pier. You will get a nice 10 minute boat ride , a harbor tour and a touch of island flavor all for a few bucks.
Atlantis is beautiful and many cruise passengers go to it . There are many alternative activities available as well. If you have heard badly about this port you have heard incorrectly in my opinion.
I just learned that Celebrity dropped our port of call in the Turks & Caicos and
substituted Nassau in its stead. So I checked the shore excursions for Nassau
and there seems to be enough to do that's interesting. One that interests us
is the Stingray Snorkel and Beach Break- close encounters with the stingrays
(much like the one in Grand Cayman) and a beach break at Blackbeard's Cay
where you can get a beach chair and a welcome drink- there is a beach
bar and grill for snacks. Of course there are the excursions to Atlantis; close
encounter with the dolphins; seaworld explorer submersible; pirate and dungeon
tours. So I'm leaning towards the Stingray/Beach Break tour and then do a bit
of shopping before returning to the ship. I have no qualms about visiting Nassau,
although I am disappointed in not seeing the Turks & Caicos which we have never
been to. Oh well, we are still on a CRUISE!!!! And still smiling!
Nassau is very easy to get around. Atlantis is a great place to just wander around, do some gambling walk thru the aquarium and the dig. You can use their beach for a fee. Taking the water taxi over to Paradise Island is fun and an "experience"
Worst island posts? I've never seen anyone complain about Nassau. It's usually Jamaica. We've been to both places and never had any problems with either one. I wish we had had more time in Nassau. It was a 8-2 time period. Of course, not having our luggage yet didn't help. It arrived as we were leaving for the next port.
Enjoy your cruise. You will probably get as hooked as we are. Note our record so far.
