Porting in Cozumel, we have reserved our own rental car from Hertz in Playa del Carmen. So we will catch the first ferry we can to the mainland, find Hertz and then travel on our own.
1. Anyone know how to find Hertz once you get off the ferry?
2. Our first priority is to drive to and visit Tulum. How long does the drive take? How much time is needed there to do it justice?
3. If it's possible at all, we would like to drive from there to Coba. Is this safe on your own? How is the road? How long does that drive take? How much time is needed to do Coba justice? It just sounds awesome. We would like to do BOTH ruins but don't know if that's realistic seeing we need to allow plenty of time to drive back to Playa del Carmen and then ferry back to Cozumel in time to board our ship.
4. Another alternative is Hidden Worlds Cenotes. Anyone ever do this? Looks awesome!
They are all excellent choices! Another one you did not mention is Xcaret, great place to see. You did not indicate how long you are in Coz. I have searched for maps etc on sites like aboutcancun.com, etc. You can get an idea of traveling in those areas. It's hard to say how long you need. The good thing about doing a tour is the guide will point out and explain many things about the ruins, very interesting indeed but the time is limited to go off and explore. If you do it yourself you can explore but you will miss out on the knowledge. But if the main thing is just to see it (they are all fascinating) I would suggest getting a map and planning the route and do as much as you can. If you were going to Progresso I could tell you a great website for the ruins in that area but that's not the case. We spent a week in Cancun this summer and went to Chichen Itza. I've seen Tulum before years ago and it does not compare to Chichen. Because of the fascination with the ruins we are planning on a trip next year to that area as there are many many more in the Yucatan to visit.
I was in that area last year. We went to Tulum and looked around without a tour guide. It would have been nice with one but not necessary. I think we were there for about an hour and a half. Everyone down there did say that Chichen Itza (sp? - we were told just to call it Chicken Pizza) was much better than Tulum but it wasabout a 3 hour drive away. Too far for us. Of the other places you mentioned we only went to Xelha and had a fantastic time. Great snorkeling, or just ride on a tube if not interested in the snorkle part. We also had a great time cliff jumping. Either way both were easily done in one day.
We are doing the same thing! Do you anticipate enough time to get off the ship, ferry accross, and then a 1-2 hour trip to Tulum?
I just cruised with RCCL and many of the car rental companies had representatives that came to the pier when we got off the ship.
If the shore excursions manage to do it with masses of people, going at a much slower and cumbersome pace, you can do it individually too. We just have to make sure we take careful note of the ferry times back to Cozumel from Playa and allow enough time. We also have to catch a cab back to the cruise ship dock when we arrive at the ferry dock in San Miguel. Have a great cruise!
