I think all the hotels in San Juan are overpriced. So be ready. Before you book a hotel, find out what dock you will be leaving from. All ships do not leave from the same area. The RCI "Adventure of the Seas" leaves from the Pan American Pier. This pier is not near the Wyndham Hotel. Many people (including travel agents) are not aware of this. You may want to look at www.traveladvisor for hotels that are rated by other travelers, too.
Try the Hotel Milano, Old San Juan, within walking distance of the port and in the heart of Old San Juan. It's also featured on www.tripadvisor.com and has a restaurant on the top level with a view of the harbor.
We stayed at the Wyndham Old San Juan Hotel and Casino AFTER our cruise. It was very nice. Walking distance to shops and the ferry that takes you to Catano (Where you can go see the Bacardi Rum Distillary).
Many people on our ship stayed at the Caribe Hilton before the cruise.
Check out both!
Book your hotel through priceline.com! You will save a ton of money and stay at very nice hotel. In June, I stayed at the 5 star Intercontinental for $90/night and the 4 star Hilton Caribe for $60/night. Go to biddingfortravel.com to get an idea how much people have been bidding for hotels in your area, then bid on priceline.com.
The Bacardi tour is interesting in the history and the process of making the rum. There is some tasting and the grounds are nice. My husband took the tour while my children and I walked around the grounds viewing birds, lizards and crabs. They also have a nice gift shop to buy rum and Bacardi gear. Have fun!
