Default Shore excursion recommendation for an active traveler (S &am

Hello! I was hoping that I could get some recommendations for seeing
some of my stops without taking the cruise-sponsored excursions. I'm
interested in almost anything so long as it doesn't focus on shopping
or sitting in a bus. Hiking, kayaking, snorkeling are all good. Even
tropical gardens.

I'm on the Constellation this coming Friday. The ports are:

Casa de Campo, D.R.
Barbados
Grenada
Antigua
St. Thomas

In Antigua I've been drawn into www.antiguaadventures.com. In St.
Thomas I'm very sure I want to go to St. John, but I don't know what
the best way to see the land-based parks is, at least not without
getting in a crowded tour bus.

In Barbados I've been told to find a cab and hire the driver to play
tour guide. Any recommendations on how to make sure I get a good
guide? Will the same strategy work well in Grenada?

Finally: Casa de Campo???? I've read a lot of mixed things, and I'm
nervous about kayaking after going on a kayak excursion where the
kayaks were so bad I couldn't keep from tipping over.

Thank you for any suggestions!!!

Ethan - on St. John Island the best way to get around the National Park is by renting a jeep or 4-wheel drive vehicle grab a map and go exploring. Beautiful beaches on this island, Cinnamon Bay has some good snorkeling and is not as touristy as Trunk Bay ( go to www.vinow.com for info)
When we were in Grenada we took a tour up into the mountains, the spice plantations and the forest - beautiful.

Thanks for the suggestions! Is renting a vehicle on Saint John's easily done upon arrival, or do I need to do anything in advance? And for Grenada, do you remember whose tour it was?

Thanks!

Only place I can recommend from your list is to definitely catch the Red Hook Ferry at St Thomas and take it over to St John. We rented a jeep for the day and drove around the island ourselves. Very bueatiful and I wouldn't miss it!

Sorry Ethan I wrote a great long email after a couple of glasses of wine yesterday and just realised I must have erased most of it!!! What I did say was it's best to hire a cab in Barbados and lots to see. In antigua taxis are good again and Nelson's Dockyard is interesting,
cheers,
Teresa

We were at St. John's this past spring. We went to Trunk Bay. It was a very nice beach and the snorkeling there was ok. The water was clear but not that clear. They said a storm moved threw a couple days earlyer. If you do go there bring your own snorkel gear. The gear they rent there I was not impressed with. Luckly I had my own with me but our friend rented his and wished he brought his own gear. Good luck and have fun!

if your going to trunk bay, go left clear to the end of the beach, nice snorkling and not beat down like the underwater tour. cinimon beach is windy, hawksnest to me is tricky getting in and around the coral that is so close to the surface. u can also snorkle at canell bay. pricy place but free to go on the beach

as far as i know, all the jeep rentals are the same price on st john usvi. $55 a day, gas is a little hight, but the jeeps are very good on fuel. if u dont have your own snorkle gear, go to low key, it will be to the right at the one and only intersection. rentals are fair priced and in good shape. we personally like big maho bay for snorkling, park on right side of road, walk across the stree and your on the beach))))) water shallow for kids, and good snorkling around the rocks on the right hand side. if u got time, go to joes ribs for supper, cheap and really really good, the are on the corner by the post office, u can smell them roasting. in fact i think i can smell it now. yum......service is lousy, sort of like the soup natiz on the tv show friends, but i find it funny to watch people sit donw and expect to be waited on any time soon. lololol
