hubby and I are going to be going on cruise consisting of the following ports; Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, Antigua, St. Lucia, St. Maarten and Hispaniola. What excursions would you advise and are there beaches within walking distance from the various piers also are crafts and venders nearby?
Puert Rico. Beaches are a short cab ride away. Within walking distance of pier is OLd San Juan. The ultimate craft/ shopping venue in Puerto Rico.
St Thomas. If you dock at Havensight, shopping is across the street or downtown which is only a few minutes away by cab. Beaches , the best are really on the other side of the island. Cabs probably run about $7 perperson . Maegens Bay, most popular (also has $3 admission. Beautiful large crowded beach. All facilities and services.
Saphire Beach . Nice snorkelling off the beach, all facilities and services no admission fee. Coki Beach. Adjacent to a paid attraction, Coral World. All facilities and services .
Snorkelling and even beginner scuba is done here.
Antigua- You dock right in town or just outside but still in the harbor. If downtown all shopping is within 2 blocks of ship. If outside town there is a small crafts bizarre. All
other shopping just a short cab ride away. There are 365 beaches in Antigua. None right by the piers. Ask a cab driver crew member or port consultant to recommend one the has what you want.
St Lucia. Shopping is either right in the port or on little island adjacent to port.($1 water taxi ride away). Beaches are not within walking distance. Somenice ones are a short distance away, just north of Castries, near the Rex ST Lucian Hotel.
St Martin. You can go to the beach in Great Bay itself , right behind all the stores .
There are pretty beaches over near the airport(cab ride) . Most popular beach, Orient,
is a cab ride away on the French side. You will encounter topless bathers and there is a nude beach here as well. All facilities are available.
My favorate beach here is Dawn Beach. Attracts some cruisers, locals and tourists from nearby villas and condos. Beach bar, beach concession selling food, chair rentals etc.
Shopping can be done near the beaches, but most shopping is on main streets of Philipsburg.
Sorry, can't help with Hispaniola.
There are some beautiful beaches over on St. John Island just a short water taxi ride from Red Hook Harbor on St. Thomas. I like the beaches on St. John better than the one's on St.Thomas. Good shopping in St. Thomas at Havensight Mall or downtown Charlotte Amalie.
San Juan plenty of beaches to choose from. Take some time to wander around Old San Juan its very pretty. If you want to visit a rain forest, book a tour up into the rain forest
