As a former Floridian , what we called Sand Fleas are a small crusteasian about two inches long. We would find them burrowing in the sand near the edge of the water.
We also have Sand Flies, which are biting creatures, which are also known as midges or no-see-ums. We were in Roatan in December. There were no biting insects present then. We went to West End and to the botanical garden on the way and walked around in all of the trees. There were none either. Hope you enjoy your visit. We liked it very much.
While SAND FLEAS are worse a some times than others, they certainly can be a problem ALWAYS on the sandy beaches! Be sure to sit in a chair instead of directly on a beach towel in the sand and use a bit on insect spray and you'll be all right! Have FUN! The snorkeling there is not to be missed!
