It really varies a lot depending on what your lifestyle is like and what you intend to do.
If you drink a lot that can bring spending costs up considerably - same if you are shoppers. Do you plan on taking the ship's shore excursions? They tend to be a LOT more expensive than anything you arrange yourself. We just got back from a cruise in the Eastern caribbean and spent approximately $500 (We are NOT big drinkers or shoppers and we arranged our own shore excursions).

You can spend as much or as little as you want. Are you just talking in port or on the ship? Do you want to drink, gamble or shop? Do you plan to book shore excursions or just go lay on a beach? As an example, if you want to spend the day relaxing on Paradise Beach in Cozumel it will cost you $12-$13 for the cab there and back plus anything that you want to eat or drink but if you want to swim with the dolphins it will cost you cab fare, entry fee and swim fee of around $150 each. I always figure out what I want to do and research the cost then I lay out my budget day by day to see what it adds up to. Most of the price information can be found on these boards. I hope this helps!

i plan $100 a day that includes buys on the ships sign and sail. we made our own tours and dont drink much, i think there was 9 or 10 drinks , u can find out shore excursions here on cruisemates and can plan according. helicopter ride to monserate was $190. each, but so worth it. taxi from san juan airport is $17 each and $1 for each bag. i stayed out of the casinos this time and had tips removed from bill so my total was $199 on the sign and sail card. the rest will show up on my CC

My wife and I do not drink or gamble. We by pictures and shop. and do at least one shore excusion on every island and we usually have a ship bill of $700-$800 to pay at the end of the cruise.

$100/day/person is more than enough, but only take $200 in in $1's and $5's for tips and cabs. Us credit cards for the rest because you'll get a much better exchange rate than if you use cash.

we take 2000. and that includes cash for the days before boarding --- all tips (we sail on hal) gift purchases ashore etc etc etc and we allow about 100 per person per nite for gambling-though we have never lost it all- so i do have cash in my pocket on the way home

I have been on 5 cruises. There are two of us and we always bring about $150.00 per day. It's always enough. If we come back with money left over we just put it aside for another trip. But its nice to know that you have enough with you to enjoy everything you want to and not get stuck. A little advise. I call down to the pursers desk every morning to get a balance and then I take the money out of the safe and put it in a seperate envelope to pay at the end of the trip. Good way to keep you in budget to see about how much you go through each day. Take travelers checks to pay for the expenses.

Hello - thanks for the advice. My question is how much cash, travellers checks and/or credit cards should one bring? is the room safe, safe?? What about walking around on the ship - do we need cash or just for exursions? Obviously, we have never cruised before!

We are going on a four night cruise (Key west, cozumel) and don't gamble and drink a little. We want some good experiences but don't need to shop a lot.

Any guidance will help.
Thanks so much

On a ship all you really need is your card. Everything can go on it and it will be linked to one charge card. You just pay the bill at the end of the cruise.

The safes are safe.

As to how much money to bring is totally up to you. Decide ahead of time what you are going to do and how much you want to spend in each port and stick to your budget. I do not spend more than $400 total for a family of 4 cruise but we are not drinkers or gamblers.

I have read all of these replys, and they are giving you very good advice on budgeting for the cruise. However, I want to give you a couple of tips that my wife and I have found to be a good idea. We have several credit/debit cards, but, we only take two. I take one which is a Master Card, and she takes another which is a Discover Card. That way, if one or the other of us looses our purse or wallet, we don't loose both cards. One of us will have a card to see us through the trip. Prior to leaving home, we leave a copy of our credit card with a relative who we can trust. Then, if something were to happen, we could always call and have them cancel that card. Thank God we never had to do this, but, you never know.

The safes on Celebrity seem to be SAFE! You make up a combination that only you know when you get on board. The last day you enter your code and then leave the safe open for the next occupant of the room. It is that simple.

It seems that everyone has their hand out for a tip when traveling. Porters, cab drivers, side trip cab drivers, side trip boat pilots, etc. etc. So, I always take a pack of five dollar bills and a pack of one dollar bills for this very reason. The rest I take in travelers checks which can be cashed on board at the pursers office.

You can also get a running total of your expenditures on the onboard menu driven TV in your room.

Good luck and have a safe and fun time on your cruise.

We just returned from a 7 day, there were 5 of us, me, my husband and 3 kids, ages 14, 7 & 5, our onboard account totalled 1400.00 at the end for shore excursions, tips, onboard shopping, etc... We spent roughly 100.00 in each port for shopping and lunch for all of us. I took $600.00 in travelers checks for "outside expenses" not covered under the onboard account, such as the casino, and for our trips into port. I thought it was very reasonable especially for 5 people! Couldn't have spent that little at club med!
