This may sound silly but I'm a bit of a wimp and don't do well driving in lots of traffic. I wanted to rent a car in Cozumel and I'm wondering what the traffic is like? Are there city type roads and multi lane highways or is it mostly like you'd find in small town America? Thanks for any assistance.
You don't have anything to worry about as far as the roads. Right in town, there is some traffic, but it is easy to drive. If you are planning to go away from the town to Chakanaab or to visit other beaches or the ruins, the roads are very easy to follow and there is very little traffic. My husband and I rented a car and went all the way around the island. We went to Chakanaab, a few beaches, and the ruins, and didn't even have to get off of the road. It was pretty much on the same road all around the island - EASY DRIVING!!
As my husband said recently..."If nything, WE were the worst drivers in Cozumel!"
Nothing to stress about at all. The center of town (San Miguel) is a little congested w/pedestrians and everyone else who rented cars, but it's easy to get out on the main road...and yes, there is 1 main road around the whole island....not a highway...just a 2 lane road.
We are soooo glad we rented a car and explored the island....you're bound to have a memorable day! Have a great adventure!!!
The roads are small and often crowded in town. The drivers can be a bit crazy. I've rented a jeep lots of times, but I'm comfortable driving in the city and driving in traffic. If you aren't, you may not want to drive in town. The road to the south and east is not congested, but it's basically one big loop - you'll have to go thru town at some point.
