We have booked the Falls/Dolphin Cove tour. We really want to see the falls but not sure if we want to climb them with everyone. Can one just go there and walk around or wade in the water? Is there some shade? Thanks to everyone for all their tips.

Hi CA,
No, you don't have to climb and there is plenty of shade. They also have a stairway that goes up the side of the falls with openings, in case anyone actually clomging decides to stop and go up the stairs instead. If you do clomb, be sure to wear water shoes or some old tennis shoes, the rocks are slippery and its fun too!
Donna,
Thanks for the fast reply and info. We do have water shoes. If we do climb, are there lockers to put our backpack in? Don't want to get everything wet. We will buy an underwater camera also.

Hi CA,
When we did the falls, we went with a ship excursion, so all our things were locked on the bus, we even forgot tip money for the guide up the falls and he followed us all the way back to the bus:-) The guide will even take pics with your camera for you and carry them up too.
We've done the Falls tour thru the cruise line also, and left our things on the bus. However, they do have lockers at the top of the falls. (but I didn't look to see how much they were).
Whatever you do, don't forget your tip money.... Because, just as Donna said...the guide will follow you back to the bus to get his tip money if you didn't bring it with you.

We booked our tour for Dunns Falls/Fern Gully with Peat Taylor. I hear here's great and for what we get it's only 30/pp and that includes admission into Dunns Falls.
I've done the Dunn's River Falls and it was fantastic! However, it was very slippery and the water was very fast in some areas. I was surprised that they let children do this. You go with a guide and are in a line so whoever is behind you may need your help as the guide isn't always there to help you. We had a father and two children behind us and were always helping them. One of the children lost their water shoe as the water was running very fast. Also, our guide helped another party, a mother and child because the child had been swept over one part of the fall. Everything turned out OK, but it was scary. There is a halfway point that you can go to if you decide to leave the falls. The experience was incredible, but I really don't think it is for children!
Dunns River falls has a very nice park associated with it. There are viewing platforms that you can watch those climbing and take pictures of your friends. It is a very pretty park. If you go on your own, there is a fee for getting in. If you have booked a tour, I am sure your ticket is included.
