We are on aos in sept. We where planning on jumping in a taxi from airport and over to terminal we will go! Then soemone told me husband the taxis are horrific, scary he feared being mugged etc. Can anyone help me? Should I do the transfers through cruise ship, I just hating having to wait for bus to fill up, but if safety is an issue I will do so. PLease let me know any advise on this matter. Happy cruising to all!
We take the taxi all the time. You will have nothing to worry about. The only thing you will worry about is how much of a good time you are about to have.
When we go out of San Juan we usually go the day before so we can enjoy PR.I agree with you on waiting for the bus to fill, take the cab and beat the MOB.It will cost you about $30 to the ship.
I agree, don't wait. Get a taxi, they are very regulated there. And they all charge the same. You will run into someone within the AP to set it up. Go! Be free! And save the money on transfers for you prizes on the islands!
You also need to know that if the suitcases don't all fit in the trunk....they do tie them on but rest assured, ours all got there ok. and atthe same time we did and you will pay alittle extra for the tied on cases. Regarding safety......we were there in Feb for two days prior to our cruise and at no time did I feel unsafe. Use the same eyes you would at home traveling out after dark and alone. Bon Voyage and have a wonderful time.
Don't worry about the taxis. We were there in June with my children. The taxi line at the airport went very quickly. A person fills out a slip for you either in the luggage area at a stand or while you are in the taxi line. They do charge per piece of luggage, but we thought the taxi was reasonably priced and efficient. Note that drivers in Puerto Rico are even worse than Atlanta, but there are seatbelts in the taxi.
I would always take a taxi in San Juan instead of the bus. No waiting and for a family of four, cheaper than transfers.
We did not have any problem whatsoever with taxis in San Juan. They are perfectly safe, so is waking at night in Old San Juan. We stayed there two days pre-cruise last month and took taxis everywhere, just tell them where you are going and ask how much it is going to be before you get in.
Don't worry - we were there in Feb and took a taxi. Taxi dispatch at the airport is very organized and what you will pay is clearly written out by the dispatcher so there are no arguments. All you do is add a tip. Some cabs are not in the best shape but they got us to and from the airport.
We've done both transfers and taxi. We always do a pre-cruise stay in San Juan, we love it there! We walk everywhere while in Old San Juan- but the last time we skipped the cruise transfers and took a taxi to our hotel, and to the cruise ship as it was not docked right there in town. The taxi was around $25 to the hotel and maybe $15 to the ship from Old San Juan. Just make sure you have a firm price including per bag charge before getting in the taxi!
Enjoy yourself!
We took two taxi's during our April pre-cruise visit to San Juan. There are fixed rates for taxis.....basically done by area. There is an extra charge for using the taxi - around $3 or $3.50...but overall the taxi prices were reasonable. I don't recall feeling unsafe at all.
