New Orleans Hotel - Free shuttle to port?

Ahoy Cruisers,

We will be sailing out of New Orleans on 4/24/05. We would like to know a decent HOTEL to stay in New Orleans for a couple of days, precruise, that is within close proximity to the cruise dock, and perhaps has a free shuttle. My hubby just found out N.O. is having a jazz festival during that time. Any ideas, suggestions, your experience and what you did would be appreciated.

We are leaving from NO Dec. 18th. I have not been there personally, however my inlaws own a timeshare there and have assured me we are staying in the right spot.

We booked at the Doubletree on Canal street, which is near the Julia Street cruise port. It is about 2 blocks (if that) from the cruise dock, so we may not even need a taxi.

The hotel is across the street from Harrah's Casino, and 1 block from the St. Charles Trolley stop, which takes you on the city tour. Also, 1 block from Bourbon Street, 1 block from Mississippi Riverwalk, Paddleboat, & aquarium. It is right between the Garden District & the Warehouse district I'm told.

We chose this hotel because it has a nice pool for the kids, and also not near too much noise at night. Really great price, too. Will try to post back after we go to let you know if it was as great as forecasted.

We were just there in May and the Riverwalk is actually right at the cruise port. You can drop your luggage off and if it is really busy you can wonder around the riverwalk and shop or window shop to kill time. That is what we did and we didn't have to wait in a line up at all. It is a very nice port to cruise out of.
Enjoy yourselves.
You can actually go on this web site and catch your cruise in port it's kinda neat.

Have a great time.
