I am wondering if anyone knows what the distance from the airport to the pier in San Juan is and also if the airport is safe enough to sit and wait for someone in?
It takes a good 1/2 hour by transfer to get from the airport to the pier. I've never encountered any safety issues at that airport. It's a very busy international aiport, and the same common sense type approach should be taken there as you any major aiport. Don't forget, get security and that is overseen by the US TSA because Puerto Rico is a US territory. Local security is a local police matter, but because of the influx of cruise passengers they have to keep the aiport safe because the cruise lines would not would really pressure them if it was not. Tourism is there major industry.
If you are going to be there waiting for awhile ,go down to the end there is a chamber of commerce office there, they have all the brochures that you will need for San Juan,oh and by the way FREE drinks.
As far as safe We have sailed out of San Juan at least 10 times{again 1/17/05]and have never seen a problem. We have waited 4 hours for our flights and nothing.
