We are sailing out of New York on the Carnival Legand August 9. We will be docking in St. Thomas from 7am till 6pm. We really want to go over to St. Johns Island for a few hours. I went to the Carnival website and the only shore excursion they have for St. Johns doesn't leave St. Thomas till 1pm and arrives back at 5:30. That seems like it is cutting it very short to get back to the ship. Could someone please offer me some advise. Thank-you
If you take a ship excursion, they will NOT leave without you. That is one of the benefits of ship tours if you are new to cruising or in a new destination. If you book with the cruiseline, they know how many people they have booked on it, and if the tour is delayed for any reason, they will wait. Many folks on these boards have done St. John on their own, and with a full day stop at St. Thomas, it is certainly possible and probably cheaper. Someone else will post and explain how to do that. I have not tried it yet, just did the ship tour. Good luck. Trunk Bay is gorgeous.
If tight time constraints worry you at all, then a ships excursion is the way to go. As stated above, even if you are late, they will not leave without you.
Otherwise, get in a cab and tell the you want to go to Red Hook Ferry Terminal. Ferries run roughly every half hour and are about $3 or$4 each way. Once in St John, pick up a cab to your beach of choice. Most first timers would go to Trunk Bay. Do not cut yoour return times close if you are on your own. Very nice beaches on St Thomas include the very popular Maegens Bay, Coki Beach and Saphire Beach. All will offer you a very nice beach day without the hassle of the ferry.
Whatever you choose, have a great day.
