what is the best excursion in nassau...we are only there from 8am til 2pm and are wondering what would be the best option in that short amount of time.
We were diverted here due to Hurricane Dennis. Nassau seems to be much like the Florida Keys. We did a tour of Atlantis. It was okay, but nothing great.
My suggestion: There are stingray snorkel and other snorkel excursions. Ours got cancelled due to muddy water : ( but I'm sure you will be okay. We also thought the Sea Explorer would have been okay.
There are also some beach excursions. Don't waste time on a tour of Nassau if you can do a snorkel/beach excursion. We couldn't snorkel because of weather, but would much preferred to have done that instead of the city tour that we did.
do the aquarium at Atlantis Resort, it is amazing- very easy to get there - just grab a cab either land or water over to Paradise Island, Atlantis is right there. You walk into the casino and there is a kisosk where you buy your tickets.
You might be hard-pressed to get a snorkel-sting ray excursion in, being that your time in port is so short, and that you need to be back on the ship at the latest 45 minutes prior to sailing.
A fun thing to do is to grab a horse & buggy cab at the pier and just go for a ride around Government Center , the Pirate Museum is close by government center.
The Straw Market is also a consideration.
Has anyone ever booked a sting ray trip (or other nassau excursion) from a different group than Carnival? Any recommendations for good local companies?
I heard that the sting ray island was damaged by the last hurricane and not up for business - but I guess that's wrong?
Merm - the water taxi is an "experience" to say the least, it was fun, its more like a small ferry, you wait until its full then you head over to Paradise Island, maybe 10 minutes. I don't recall the price off hand, was cheap. Land Taxis are also very interesting, usually an older Caddy with no air conditioning, but it doesn't really matter - its a short ride, again maybe 10 minutes.- cheap
Admission to the Aquarium is $25.00 per person ( i think) Its an amazing Aquarium, you walk thru the aquarium, you are surrounded on all sides and over your head by water and marine life. You enter thru the casino which is gorgeous , there will be a kiosk where you buy your tickets. You can wander around the public areas of the hotel, get an ice cream after your tour, yummy. If you want lunch, eat at the sports bar in the casino. The bistro type restaurant in the main lobby is way over-rated and over-priced.
You used to be able to walk the docks outside the hotel and gape at the huge yachts, not sure if you can still do this, as the resort has really tightened security.
If I recall correctly the water ferry was about $6.00 pp roundtrip. (don't forget the tip for the guy who talks about the island---) It was a great way to get to Atlantis. FYI--buy the tickets from the desk inside the port building or from the boat guy himself. Just felt safer than buying from someone on the street.
Also be sure to check out the straw market for shopping. Lots of fun bargaining.
Liane - Atlantis Resort and Casino is a huge resort complex on Paradise Island. It is this huge coral colored structure that you will see as soon as you pull into port. Its a five-star very expensive, ritzy resort. Lots of celebs stay here. Oprah Winfrey has stayed there, Rob and Amber of Survivor fame had their weddding there.
