I am considering doing a Southern Carib and partial transit of the Panama Canal on Holland America. I was wondering if the partial transit is woth it? Do you get enough of the feel of the canal and the historic awe with only the partial. We have never been to the Southern Carib before and all the ports would be new to us. We live on the West coast and have sailed the Mex Riv a few times, so going the whole transit may be a waste of time. Any experience or opinions on this would be greatly appreciated!
I was on a partial back in 1998 and you definitely get the feel of the canal because you go through one set of the locks. I am thinking of doing it again in 2006 and will do the partial again instead of the full transit. You can take an excursion on a boat that will take you through the other 2 sets of locks if you are going East to West bound.
Thanks for the info, I am a teacher and the only time I can make the trip is during school vacations! The full transits only run when I am in work! I will indeed try the partial transit! Any advice or hints let me know! We are looking at the Zaandam or Amsterdam!
