Default Bioluminescence Bay in San Juan

Hello!

I am looking for input from those who have done or know someone who has done the Bioluminescence Bay Moonlight Tour. It will not be a full moon on the evening that we are traveling and I wanted to know if this is still a good choice. If not can you please offer suggestions for a couple in their late 20’s? Thank you so much!

PS . We will be arriving at 5pm and leaving at 12am

Wendy from what i have heard from others on these boards, it really needs to be a full moon to get the full effect and to appreciate it.
There is a company that offers an escorted night walking tour of Old San Juan full of history and ghost stories, someone mentioned it on this board not to long ago, that sounds like fun.
There isn't a lot to do in San Juan at night except hit the hotels for dancing and casinos IMO

It's not the full moon but the New Moon I belive that makes for better viewing. Also depends on the month you are going. I've read that it's brightest from July-October. Im going in December so I decided to skip the bay this trip, but I've read some wonderful reviews about this place so go check it out if you like. I will do it if Im back at this port next time.

Default Moon

Thank you both for your replies. I have also posted on boards.cruisecritic.com and have been told that there needs to be little or no moonlight in order to see everything.

I checked and there will be a new moon on that day. I was told that if the moon is bright then you will need to get under the water to see the fulll effect. I was also told that 3 of the 5 hours are labor intensive kayaking from those that have done it. I think we are going to try it everyone said it was a must see!

Hi Wendy,

We have done this tour with a tourguide from Puerto Rico, started kayaking at the ocean front, through the mangroves to the bay. The mangroves are very nice, with all the wild life in it. When you come to the bay, it is best that you have a clouded sky or indeed no moon. When you put your hand in the water, you see the water lighten up, if the temperature is good, you can swim and see your body lighten up.
It is just beautiful, go for it if the weather is ok.

Default bio bay

Wendy have you gone on the bio bay tour as yet? If not I suggest a deet free mosquito repellant as there are many and you are sure to get bit! The repellant must be deet free as the deet kills the microorganisms in the water. Hope you have fun!
