Default Ocho Rios - Off The Beaten Path

Returning to Jamaica this April. Looking for something different and away from all the tourists. I've done Dunn River Falls, shopped the main town, been to the plantations. Not into scuba/snorkeling.

My question---
How safe is it to hire a private taxi for about five hours or so, and tour the mountainous region into the interior of the island, away from the tourists, to see the "real" Jamaica and it's native culture. I've heard some scary stories about Jamaica, but don't know if they are blown out of proportion or not. I am daring and adventurous by nature, and always looking to experince the "unusual".

Thank you for your replies.

I, too, have heard some scary stories. I, personally, would not stray too far and I would only do the ship's excursions.
