We did the America's Cup Regatta on our last cruise. It is fabulous! We did our excursion in the morning and then had time to go to a beach in the afternoon.

Here is a link to our pictures from that day: http://community.webshots.com/album/528943965HpvFnj

When we were done racing, I asked if I could steer the boat, and they let me sail the Stars and Stripes back into the harbor! What a thrill!

it all depends upon the length of time you are in port and the length of your shore excursion.
IF you book the morning sail in St. Maarten you will have enough time to wander around St. Maarten and do some shoppping, or spend a couple of hours on the beach.
St. Thomas - same thing if you book a morning excursion you will have enough time to do a little shopping.
Budget your time, plan for traffic, travel time to and from your destination, and you need to be ON THE SHIP 1 HOUR BEFORE DEPARTURE.
