Default st maarten/st martin or st barts?

we are on the carribean princess to eastern carribean april 2. we have been discussing what to do when we stop at st maarten/st martin. we thought maybe we would take the rapid explorer to st barts for the day. has anyone done that? what is there to do on that island? is it easy to get to the beaches or do you need to take a taxi? is there something else to do on st maarten instead that we should absolutely not miss?

any and all help would be appreciated.

on our last cruise to St. Maarten we did the Golden Eagle Catamaran tour offered by the ship. It was great, would do it again.

If you've never been to St. Maarten, then stay on that island. But we absolutely loved St. Bart's. It's very European and hilly. Was able to rent a little car and drove the entire island easily. This is a favorite spot of celebrities. Beauches are gorgeous. We remember St. Jea beach, next to an airstrip, watching planes take off and land. Very expensive to eat on the island, too. Our ship was in port so we just waited and ate back on board. One couple told us they spent $80 US for two burgers and two beers at a very modest little cafe.
If you want a more European flavor on St. Maarten, go to the French side to Marigot. Seemed like we were back in France. More expensive than the Dutch side, though.
If you want a taxi rental, go to the taxi stand at the end of the pier (very easy to find) Our taxi driver was Mary Nicholas, and she was wonderful. Took us to the French side to Orient Beach. It's a clothing optional beach, and you see all shapes and sizes humans strutting along!!
From what we were told, snorkeling isn't as good here as in other stops, so we've never snorkeled here.
St. Maarten (Dutch side) is known for their shopping deals. Since we love ebay, we didn't find anything great except for a few watch bands for my Philip Stein watch, which were a bit less expensive than here in the US. It all depends what you are looking to buy, but check ebay prices first so you can compare.
Hope this helps.
Have fun!!

Never for the day, but I have stayed on St. Barts a while back and had a great time. It is expensive. Favorite beach was at Colombier. It is a bit out of the way, but a great crescent shaped beach looking back at St. Marteen.

If you go, consider Le Select in the heart of Gustavia for a burger. The claim is that this is the burger that inspired Jimmy Buffet to author his famous song on the subject.
