Default carnival valor.-Questions about cell phone and st.maarten

I will be on the VAlor in April and leaving three small kids with grandma. I was wondering if verizon cell phones work on that ship and at ports:Nassua, St.Thomas, and St. Maarten. Also what are the charges for using cell phones on the ship. Addtionally, We want to see both sides of St. Maarten, what is the best way? Taxi, rent a car or tour. And if a tour what tour would you recommend. Thanks so much to anyone who reponds!

I would suggest calling your cell phone company and asking them specifically if you will have service in each port. I have Sprint and I do this every cruise, as service coverage is constantly changing. Last cruise, they told me to download an update that would help reduce costs and improve my range of coverage. Once, I added, just for a month, an extra charge so enable my phone to work better in the ports I was visiting on that cruise.

I rented a car once in St. Maarten and thought it was a good way to see the island and have the freedom to do what you wanted to do.

I was on this ship/ itenary recently and most cell phones will not work. The charges are somewhere around $6.95 a minute I was told if you had verizion. I have tmobile, so not sure if that was true. But I do know from past experience that you will be charged high roaming rates if you try to use the cell phone, or it gives you other companies to use when searching for a signal. by high, I mean around $8 a minute. I did not use my cell this time, and used email. Would grandma use email? it is much cheaper - buying a plan or just paying per minute. , also in ports the interent is cheaper.

We didn't have issues using our cells last year. San Juan was free for us, we have verizon...and I am close to positive St Thomas was too. If they weren't it wasn't 7 dollars a minute, thats for sure. When I called Verizon to ask them the reps really weren't sure and the info they gave wasn't accurate.
Also, apparently Yahoo answered this quesiton:

and I found this...
