Default Mexico-a good place to avoid

Yes, may ships visit Mexico and most of the time there are no incidents, but that isn't always the case. Once again, a tourist has been killed, ok, so Mexican police are calling it an accidental fall off a 2nd floor balcony. The man was with his wife, twin brother and four other people in Cancun when he was found severly beaten and near death. The police and so called witnesses are saying his injuries are as a result of a fall. He had obvious bruising and wounds that would indicate otherwise, but as usual, they want to cover it up to avoid any problems. It was only last year when an other Canadian couple were in Cozumel cvelebrating their daughters wedding when they were murdered, execution style--throats slashed--in their hotel rooms. Mexicans very quickly said two women, both Canadian tourists, were the ones who did it. They left the morning of the homocide and were cleared by Canadian police. It seems the Mexicans said it was them because they were on the same floor and left that day. The women didn't even know the couple and left without even knowing a murder had been committed.

This latest case is probably going to be swept under the carpet again, alas, the man, Jeff Toews, was flown back home and declared brain dead today. The medical staff concured with family that he was severly beaten and not a victim of a fall while drunk. How can you explain how he got onto a 2nd floor balcony when his room was on the main floor?

Beware of Mexico, they'll rob you, kill you, and then the police will say it was your own fault!!!!!

I don't mean to belittle what you have reported but do want to try to put
things in proper perspective.
I live in the U.S.A., state of Kentucky. A couple counties east of me a 2 year old baby, her 10 year old sister and 31 year old mother were all murdered and their residence set afire. This was yesterday, not a year or two go.
A couple counties south of me a young mother was abducted from a store parking lot, brutalized and left for dead. This too happened a couple days ago. Also, ( and again within the last 2 days, ) a Mexican man was found murdered here in my home city. This isn't by any means a complete list of the murder, rape, robbery and mayhem that goes on around my neck of the woods, much less what happens in a days time in the country as a whole.
Maybe the Mexicans are responsible for all this ??

The point is, there's crime everywhere. The U.S is one of, if not the most, violent countries in the world.
I have been to Mexico many times and never had a problem. That's not to say I won't sometime or the other, but by using common sense I would probably be as safe, if not safer there than here at home.

I can't wait to get back to Cozumel and Costa Maya in September.

Some places are meant to be locations where you have to be aware, alert, and careful. I put Mexico, Jamaica, Trinidad, and Nassau in that category. I have been to these places many times and other than being hassled by overzealous merchants and some beggars, it has been trouble free. Look at Aruba - nice, scenic, calm - and then Natalee Hollaway. So it is all around you and the phrase "it can't happen here" does not apply.

WOW....well maybe if one reads international newspaper and not only CNN...these things happen all over the world..no matter where. By the way, the Canadian murder (as it seems to be drug traffic revenge), was south of Playa del Carmen and not in Cozumel, just for information. To blame "Meixo" or "Mexicans" ..... well... that seems...not adequate...or even well...visit Cozumel...the probably safest island in the Caribbean and South America...the back of your town is most probably more dangerous...as posted before...common knowledge and prudence are the key everywhere, I dont think it is adequate to talk about Mexican ports in this way..it is not true...thanks for respecting my point of view, experience and knowledge first hand...ENJOY vacations, dont listen to subjective news....

Check out the war torn country of Iraq. There are actually CIVILIANS working fervertly to GO OVER THERE and WORK. People are going to always put themselves in harm's way and often do so without realization of it.

I think if your cruise went to Mexico city, it might be more of a worry, but since it doesn't, I think most of us use caution, just like we would anywhere. I would hate to have missed all the exciting times we have had in Cozumel, and Cancun, just because we were scared.
