First time cruiser here...I have seen a few posts about being able to rent cars on the islands...Is it worth it?...Can you get to some of the excursion sites by car?...How safe is it traveling on the islands?...Should we leave the driving to the tours or drive and be on our own time?...We will be docked all day in St. Thomas and St. Maarten.
Don't do it in St. Thomas the roads are small and the driving was a little crazy. The bus we toke almost hit 3 people. And the driver acted like that was normal. Worst part ... So did the people he almost hit.
I think in most cases for those two islands, leave the driving to a local cab driver. They do drive on the wrong side of the street, can get very confusing for a visitor especially when you are trying to find places, etc. Cabs are very easy to get on both islands.
We took taxi's while in St. Thomas/St. John-driving there is a little crazy with no regard to stop signs-or any traffic laws (if there are any).
We did rent a car in St. Martin-just walk off the ship and turn to the right there will be a whole line of rental car kiosks. They drive on the right side of the road just like in the U.S. We had no problems driving there. We saw the entire island in one day as there is only one main road which circles the island. The only issue is the roads have not been repaired since the last hurricane and there are potholes everywhere-also the main road is very narrow in places. Still, we had a great day and saw the entire island including Dawn Beach, Orient Beach, Marigot, Grand Case, Simpson Bay, and Maho Bay with the airplanes-defintely worth a visit!
