Default Is downtown St Thomas within walking distance ?

I'm been browsing at shore excursions out of Charlotte Amalie St Thomas.
Some shore tours read "excursion ends downtown, guest are responsible for return transportation to your ship. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended".
I don't get it It seems like the historical tours end with this description. So two questions...
1) Is Blackbeard's Castle and the historic area worth seeing ?
2) Is downtown within reasonable walking distance for most healthy people ?
thanks !

Yes a normally healthy person would have no trouble making it back to Charlotte Amalie piers.... Wheather your reflexes are good enuff to dodge the traffic is another question.... There seems to be some type of construction going on all the time between the piers and downtown.... For a couple of bucks you can catch a taxi leaving about every 5 minutes from downtown to the piers.....

I think that the problem arises if you are using the crown piers... I'm not so sure how far it is from downtown to the Crown Piers......

As far as Blackbeards Castle, its one of those been there, done that things... It was interesting but there is a lot of other things that we want to do since we have done it.....
