IS it true that the crime has gone up in St.Thomas? I haven't been there in two years but it was so nice the last time. I have been there 3 times, loved it every time and was a little surprised to hear about the crime. We always took a cab to the beaches and shopping area because the ride was inexpensive so maybe that is why I didn't realize about the crime. Has it gone down hill as a place to visit? Thanks for the insight.

I use a pretty simple plan when in ports... (any port)... I don't wear anything that can be "yanked" off (like a necklace)...
I use my Samsonite (cut proof) travel bag worn across the body.
(it is lockable....so no worries about pick pockets)
If we go to a beach, I don't get in the water (or in the sun for that matter)...so I "guard the stuff" in the closest shade area.

Straying off the tourist beaten path on any island, can be risky. Many years back, the US Navy told the sailors to stay out of town, in st Thomas to be safe. We may be in vacation mode, but the population on any island is not.....
Thankfully, there is not much crime in the heavily populated shopping area, where a thief would have a hard time getting by all the men waiting outside the shops, for their wives and girl friends
