Any beach recommendations taking a cab to it?

Depends what you are looking for.

Great Bay is within walking distance of the ship and right in front of Phillipsburg - but you have to keep your clothes on.

You can take a cab to any of the beaches.

Here's a good link for you http://www.sint-maarten.net/St-Maart...n_Beaches.html

When we went my father-in-law asked the cab driver to take us to the best beach and he did! There was a tiki bar, of course, and they were making ribs right on the beach in steel drums. I have no idea what the name of the beach was but it was right next to a resort. There were people walking around selling jewelry and my husband and I did a snuba thing. I guess what I am saying is if you grab a cab and ask them to take you to a beach you will be satisfied. We loved st. martin. We also paid the cabbie a little extra to come back and get us a few hours later so we know we would not get stranded.

There is Maho (I think thats the official name) It is where the airport is. Sunset Beach Bar (or its new namesake) is there. You can sit and have a burger and beer while watching the airplanes land 30 feet over your head!

I haven't been to St. Maarten yet, but have been to several other Netherlands Antilles.
Basing myself on experience there, you can probably encounter topless women on all beaches. If your little ones aren't boys in the age 11-16 they probably only will notice if you pay attention to it.

Being European I never understood the American fuzz about nudity while shooting and killing stuff seems to be ok (no disrespect intended, I just don't understand)
But that's a whole different discussion and I don't want to hijack your thread.

Default Maho is cool, but should only be a stop...

Been to Maho and it was very cool to have a plane fly over that close to you. But, as far as beaches go it is not your expected tropical paradise. It has the airport road right long side of it, some ugly commercial buildings for the view and is very small.

It is easy to find, just head clockwise around the island and make a left once you go past the airport at the end of the runway. The bar there will have the arrival times of the big planes written on the surf board/chalk board.

We wrote down the times, and headed another ten minutes further clockwise to Mullet Bay. They had chairs and umbrellas for rent, cold beer and some questionable food vendors. Nice beach, much nicer than Maho, and beautiful view.

We timed our departure to see one of the planes land at Maho and headed back to the boat.

WARNING: Flight schedules are estimates only, they can be late and EARLY... we arrived ten minutes early and were there just as the Air France flight we targeted was landing...

WARNING II: The rental cars are all garbage... clunkers... trashed... ask to see the car first, and don't let them take you off site. At that point you have wasted too much time to back out.

WARNING III: the interior of the island is a pit... sorry, it is... plus the drive to Maho can be very long because it is a two lane road.

If you want to avoid being subjected to hours in a rent a wreck sitting in stop and go traffic on a tropical island, I highly recommend taking one of the catamaran tours that are located right off the dock. Much less stress, free beer, and you see the beauty you came for - the coastline and the ocean... We spent around three hours just driving that day, man what a waste of precious vacation time.

A true cultural difference, though our British cousins seem to be as reserved.

We went to Orient Beach. It is supposed to be clothing optional on one side and Anglo-style on the other, but of course everybody likes to get up and walk around a bit don't they

You're probably right about the cultural difference. And I agree, the British tend towards the US view on nudity (let's call it Anglo-style), where the Dutch tend towards the French and German.
Fun thing is that if you mix alcohol with Anglo-style I've seen 'm go much further than I ever would. But then again, a couple of beer brings out the best is man
