Antigua, Is it dangerous???

We are traveling aboard the Carnival Freedom on Nov. 7, 2009 and one of our stops is Antigua. We enjoy taking a cab to the beach and just hanging out in the sun and swimming for the day. I have recently read different articles on line that said Antigua was a dangerous island for tourists. Is that true? Any help would really be appreciated.

There was a brutal murder of a honeymooning couple a year or so ago. A group of six US tourists acting badly got into an altracation with a cab driver last year.

Antigua, however is mostly safe. Just be cautious and aware of your surroundings at all times. Remember they want our money and therefore do not like tourist related crime.

I've been to Antigua twice in the last year, and had no problems.
Beautiful island, lovely tours and beaches, enjoy!

Just be careful as you would in any foreign island, only take with you enough $ for the day and may-be one credit card if you plan on any shopping along the way. If you do go out on your own with a cab, just always watch the time so you aren't late getting back onboard. Just be aware of things around you and you should be fine.

murder

According to the papers, a 29 year old woman was murdered on Pigeon Point Beach on Jan. 19th. She was at a BBQ and walked on the beach. She was on a cruise celebrating her sister's wedding. Tragic.

We went to Antigua last Feb. and went on an RCCL kayak excursion - no incidents).

The Star Clipper, the ship the latest victim sailed, has cancelled calling on this island, and, Carnival has made some itinerary adjustments for Antigua as well.

Antigua is most known in the International community for its corruption, while this may not affect visitors to the island the escalating crime rate should.

Antigua is very proactive in trying to suppress negative publicity about the island like the 7 Billion dollar fraud perpetrated by Allen Stanford and aided and abetted by the Antigua government.

To gain a better insight into the levels of violent crime visit Antigua - Pirates of the Caribbean Proud supporters of the SVC's ANTI-CRIME, ANTI-ANTIGUA Campaign.. The reports in this blog are taken directly from news papers and their validity proved by a simple search on the Internet.

Don't be fooled by Antigua's carefully manipulated holiday adverts, read the truth and then decide if you want to risk taking a holiday there.

Pigeon point is in Tobago, Pigeon Island is Antigua. None of the islands are as nice as they were, if you meant Tobago it is worse there now. Exercise extreme care over there but don't worry too much, as said usual care.

Well, now, my personal idea if I wanted to hang out in the sun and swim would be to let everybody else get off the ship and establish myself as the King of the pool deck! When everybody else is in port the staff falls all over themselves to take care of the ones left aboard! Why get off the ship, negotiate with a strange cabby, visit a beach you know little about, and take all that trouble just to swim in a different patch of water?;)

Or better yet take a sfe and secure ship's tour to some of the interesting places on the island in the morning and then rule the pool deck in the afternoon sun!

Have a GREAT cruise!
