I am hearing the Bahamas, specifically Nassau and Freeport, are not so great when getting out to explore. Are there any positive ideas of what we can do there and where we can eat some local fare? Thanks!
We recently got back from Nassau & had a great experience. We did an island tour & had a fantastic time & felt very safe the whole time. We got to see some great sites & the people were very friendly. Part of the tour was a lunch stop at the Arawak Cay & we had some delicious Bahamian food, it was included in the price of the tour. When incidents such as the Disney/RCI armed robbery occur in areas, that are not considered dangerous, it's disconcerting. You have to program yourself to be aware of your surroundings, as well as the people around you. If I book a cruise with Nassau, a port I really enjoy, I will get off, and put my head on swivle....

I think both are easy to explore on your own. In Freeport you can take a $5pp taxi ride to Our Lucaya which is what I recently did. Also walked around the port area some.
I went snorkeling this time in Nassau, but a self-guided walking tour is very easy to do and maps are available at the dock area.
I thoroughly enjoyed you walking tour of Nassau. I have been to there at least 4 times & seems like I end up at Atlantis each time. I have never know exactly where to go & what to see. Have never stopped at the tourist desk to find out. I will from now on. What a beautiful island!
Thanks for the tour,
Libby
I too have always enjoyed Nassau, nice town to walk through and having Atlantis there, always worth a stop, its just so close to the pier. You can use the water taxi or a regular taxi.
We had a wonderful time while in Nassau Bahamas. We went on the Atlantis Hotel & Aquarium tour. You start out taking a ride on a "Glass Bottom Boat". The give a tour of the harbor and then they take you over to "Paridise Island", that's where the Atlantis Hotel is located. We were able to tour different shops & I was able to take several photos. Then they give you a guided tour of the Atlantis Hotel and Aquarium.
Take an extra memory card...I took a lot of photos.
Make sure that you obtain transportation if you don't go on a tour, you will have to walk a very long way...Dave & Diane

To Zydecocruiser: Thanx for all the info, will be going there next month and you really gave me a better idea of what to do. We were there 35 years ago, boy have things changed. Did you do the snorkle excursion on your own or thru the ship? Beautiful pictures!

Are there any casinos in the Bahamas that you can just walk into without paying to get in if we aren't staying there? Does the cruise ships have Casino Packages?
Pookey, Take a cab or the water taxi over to the Atlantis. A fabulous resort, and casino. Thr grounds are amazing as is the aquarium. Gorgeous shops, and, places to dine. A nice way to spend time in Nassau, and maybe you can be a big winner too!

Good idea to allow a little time to explore through the town, its got all the local touristy stores and I've never been bothered by any locals selling things.
I have never been bothered by locals either. I travel to Nassau a lot in the Winter months. I stay at the Hilton right on the beach where the ships dock. I walk around town by myself and have not had one problem with anyone.

How far is the Poop Deck? Can we walk or do we need a taxi? Are there rickshaws? Just spend 10 days in Elbow Cay and are used to doing everything for ourselves; will be strange to have to get a taxi.
Wyndam hotel on cable beach has a casino. Does not have a cover charge; it's about 20 min cab ride from port.
