Default Montego Bay Jamaica- is it a safe?

We have heard lots of negative things about Montego Bay and this is one of our destinations on our next cruise. Any suggestions? We are traveling with an 80+ year old.... Should we skip this port and stay on board?

Thank you!

Since I've been there many times, I would just stay on board, especially with an 80 year old in tow. Then again it's really up to you.

If I was in the same position as you I would get off but I would do a ship's tour. If you've never been there then it's always worth it to at least see Jamaica. It is a beautiful island.

Take care,
Mike

Even Jamaica addicts say to avoid Mo'bay, we are doing a ships trip to Negril.

There is nothing right at the port for cruisers, mostly an industrial area. Best bet, is to book some kind of excursion that an 80 year old would enjoy.

so much depends upon the mobility of the elder traveler. Jamaica is a beautiful, lush tropical island, and if they can handle a bus ride, look into what the cruise ship offers for island type tours. IF you just want to relax on a beach then look into an all-inclusive day pass at one of the resort hotels on the beach in MoBay

We had a private driver and went from M-Bay to Ocho Rios to see the falls and town and felt safe all the way, no incidents whatsoever. Of course the sun can get pretty hot so you may want some shade. Negril is on our plan for the next visit!
