Jamaica question

My friends want to hire a cab to take us around but I'm not sure that's a good idea. It's just us three girls and I read some thing about the crime in Jamaica as well as our warning from our TA. Are we safer just going with a ship tour??

Ocho Or Montego? I have been to both,and ocho is the lesser of the 2 evils, in my mind..Take a ships tour for this port, for sure....

I stayed on the bus for most of the tours in Montego Bay A day pass in Sandals, in either port, would be a nice option...once I know which port, I can give you some more info.

As Trip has said it depends upon which port you dock in. I would go with either a ships tour or with a reputable local tour operator

Many years ago I was dating a woman native to Jamaica and she wanted me to vacation there with her .Alas I did not go.These days I would not set forth there

We were in MoBay last year. NOT a place for anyone to go without being part of a monitored/approved group. Friends went on a shopping tour. The guide parked in front of each shop, entered the shop with them, then drove them to the next shop...even if it was just a few storefronts down. I went with 2 others on an approved river raft tour. it was two to a raft so I went solo and was to be kept side by side with friends. The rower separated me from the group and proposed marriage to get himself to the States. He was aggressive about it and I had no idea if I was safe or not. If it's not an accompanied tour, DON'T do it.

Plenty to see there but not on a day trip from a ship I think, when we visit we are doing the ship-trip to Negril from Mo'Bay. Beware of vendors they can be pushy. There have been cases of taxis taking you ''there'' but demanding more to take you back, knowing of course you must get back!!

We’re going to Ochs Rios. I have never been but one of the gals visited there 30 years ago. The one thing I’m worried about is her. She sometimes thinks she’s 21 again and thinks I’m too cautious and I need loosen up a little. I’m just not sure about hiring someone to take us around and would feel safer going with a group. We have plenty time to discuss it I was just curious about what other knew about Jamaica.

This is one place where this type of behavior,could get her into trouble I would only do a ship tour here...Dunns River, Fern Gulley, the Botamical Gardens, & Rose Hall, all are available, with excursions on the ship.

I hear ya! I'm doing a ship tour the other two can decide what they would rather do. I'm not playing games or taking any chances on something like this. I have a hubby and son to come home to.

Play it safe and just book a ship excursion, especially in Jamaica.

Since you are going out of Ocho Rios you have a lot more options of what to do and see. I would definately book a ships tour,or if you want to deal with a private tour operator the one that we have used many times in the past with great results is Peat Taylor, he is very reputable. Sights to see: Dunns River Falls, Fern Gully, River Rafting down the Martha Brea River, Rose Hall, the Botantical Gardens

Just take one of the "authorized" taxis outside the terminal and you will be safe.
