Haven't really considered where, but possibly near Old San Juan or somewhere nice that we'd just be able to walk around and exlplore some of the sights.
Unless things have changed in the past several years, I would avoid hotels near the airport. The airport is (or at least was) a major base for the Air Force and they had around the clock operations and the noise from military jet engines was unpleasant to say the least. (BTW - - Military jets are much louder than commercial jet engines.) We found out about this the hard way. We stayed at a very nice, and expensive, hotel near the airport and the military jets made us regret our choice of hotels.
There is a nice hotel right across the street from the port in Old San Juan, used to be the Wyndham, but is now something else. It had a nice rooftop pool where you view the port and a huge casino. Also walking distance to the sights in Old San Juan.
Thanks so much everyone for the great information. sptrout, thanks, I wouldn't have thought about that. Ron, that looks like a very nice place as well, we're excited about the nature package which includes El Yunque Rainforest, Luqillo Beach, and also the Fajardo Bioluminescent Bay.
Donna, that hotel sounds amazing, do you or anyone else know what the name of it is now??
