To me, Jamaica is one of the most beautiful Islands out there, but the locals can be very 'aggressive'. Lots of good stuff to do, but it can be touristy. I'd keep safety in numbers with an excursion of some sort, or a trip to a private (gated) beach area with a trusted guide.
You for sure have to do an excursion, still nothing right there by the port, very industrial looking. Have you given any thought to river rafting or the canopy tour. I know you can do Dunns River, but that is quite a drive, even the river rafting/canopy tour was a good 45 minute bus ride away. They also gave you the opton on staying on the bus and going to Margariettaville..
We did an island tour, that really was a waste. While this lush island is beautiful, I will stay onboard if there is a next time.
The tour consisted of, a craft center, where you had to walk uphill a bit, to craft huts, set up for sale. A tour around the wealthy area...a visit to strip mall, that had a jeweler, and like a 7-11....and finally, to a dirty Margaritaville, where a drug deal went on outisde, within feet of a cop.
For 3 out of the 4 stops, many stayed onboard the bus.
We have been here, 3 /4 times, and I decided enough...a shame really.

Montego Bay - hit the beaches, either book a day pass at one of the all-inclusive resorts or grab a cab inside the secure pier area and head over to Dr. Cove beach, its just a beach, nothing there, clean restrooms, nice an quiet, your cabbie will be more than happy to arrange round-trip transportation.
We did the Appleton Estate tour and really enjoyed that.
We also did Appleton Estates tour...My favourite part is at the end of the tour where they take you to the pub and allow you to do the samples of at least 15 of the approximately 60 products that they make...By the time we got to YS Falls I was nice and calm.
Yes, I think they want you to purchase some of their products and you are more likely to do so if you are a little loose. They gave us samples of Appleton Special, inclucding the 16 and 17 year olds. The kids told the guy their ages and he just handed the bottles to my other half for them. I would like to be able to buy the $300 bottle of the really smooth stuff.
You haven't said what ideas you are looking for, but, Montego Bay has changed over the years for the better, nice roads more beautiful beaches, restaurants and the night life is great. They have casinos, gift shops and inbond stores everywhere

They must have a lot of confidence in their products if they allow free samples before you buy.
I think anyone selling anything that let you give it a try first, will sell more in the long run...We sample things at work every day and it does pay off.
this next cruise in March of 2014 we are taking our kids (14 and 17) and are thinking about the Carnival Lines excursion of Croydon Plantation - The Spirit of Jamaica...has anyone done that one?
