You can get tours right where you dock in both ports. No need to use the ships excursions. Cheaper on your own. Not like being in a foreign port. It us still US.
St John is a gorgeous island. Prettiest I've ever seen. But since you're not interested in beach time, a tour of some sort seems appropriate.

St Thomas is the shopping capitol of this hemisphere..go down town rather than the shops at the pier..same prices , but you don't get the experience. A must do for the first time there.Tour Island ..watch out for the donkey..they want $5 to have your pic taken with the animal . :-)
Get to St. Johns and go to Trunk Bay..beautiful beach and great snorkel. Take some Milk Bone dog biscuts with you or grab som cereal from the breakfast line all to attract fish.

I just got back from San Juan....if you are going to do the city tour do not buy on the ship. We got off the boat and got a local guy to give us the same tour for half the price. We all paid 10.00 each and he stopped for us to get a cooler of beer. Look for a guy names Joe driving a hard rock cafe tour bus. He is great and gives a great tour of old and new san juan.

Hi Mike,
We took some dinner rolls from the night before and they yelled at us for feeding the fish? It was nice when we could feed them, but I guess thats a "no-no"
I think it has something to do with Trunk Bay being a wildlife preserve?? Oh, and also don't stand on any of the rocks or coral, they don't want you to ruin any of that either. Yes, got yelled at for that too
