I obviously have been spending way too much time on the web reading about cruises (cruise mates, cruise critics, you name it).
I am totally confused about these Carnival upgrades which always seem to be a source of discussion - how one family just found out they got an upgrade to a suite and all they booked was category 8 or another person waiting to see if they are getting an upgrade. I thought you get what you pay for (for us that category 8B and 4D). My TA never even raised the topic. All I want is clarification not advice on how to get upgrades.
Upgrades are very strange. I've sailed Princess 12 times and was upgraded once,about twenty years ago. I just got back from my first Carnival cruise on the Victory. I booked a standard outside cabin and was upgraded to a verandah cabin. Go figure. I was very grateful mind you, but an upgrade on the first cruise with them? I can't figure it out either.
Just wanted to share with you about our Carnival upgrade on Triumph in August. Our TA told us we had a guaranteed upgrade. We booked about 2 months in advance. It was our first cruise and we found out the day before by calling out TA we had an upgrade. We got our room number. Because of the upgrade someone elses name was on the upgrade cabin and we stood in line for an hr. to have our pic. made for id card. Pic could not be made here in the regular place because we had an upgrade. We proceeded to another line, wrong line because we had an upgrade. Waited another 30 min. to be told this. No signs telling about upgrades at the port anywhere so you stand in line like all the others, only they get through and you get diverted elsewhere. Finally we got our ID card from the purser without a picture. We were only upgraded from lowest inside cabin to the highest deck inside cabin. Our original late dinner was changed to early (without our knowledge until we boarded). Cabin stewart only knew us by the person's name who originally booked our upgrade cabin. Also, all luggage was received from others on our floor early, but because of the different colored tags, our luggage was not delivered to us until midnight that night after boarding by 2pm that afternoon. Upgrade is great, but can be a pain in the....sometimes. Feel free to email me.
