We plan to start our vacation in Orlando with a rented car, drive down to Miami, then begin a cruise. How long should we allot for travel?
What's the best way to check in the car and get to the port (for a Carnival cruise)? And what's the easiest way to get from the port to the Miami airport?
We used to live in the area and the driving is direct from Orlando to MIami. Take the turnpike to MIami and follow the signs to I-95 then to the port, or drive from Orlando east to I-95 and drive all the way to Miami that way. Allow about 5 hours for ample time to get to the port. If you need to drop the car at the airport take a cab to the port - it is no more than 20 minutes away and is set price of $18 each way. Have a great time.
If you rent from Avis, they have a drop off at the pier, so you can just drop your luggage off to have it put on the ship and your family can get on line. You then go to the office and drop the car, pay, and they will shuttle you back. It eliminates a lot of luggage transfers and tips and taxi rides.
