Help Please on Bahama Cruise

i am a big fan and avid reader of this cruise board... have learned a lot ! and i love cruising !!! only way to vacation !

but i do need help on this one. my daughter (who will be celebrating her 24th birthday dec 28) and myself (who just turned a "young 50"!) are taking a short bahama cruise on fantasy on december 27. her birthday present from her dad and i only it's for us girls only, no husbands ! i am no stranger to traveling alone, am very vocal, very friendly, people-person, nothing intimidates me. BUT - i am interested in the safety of the two of us getting around in nassau. our main reason for this crise is to go to the atlantas. we'll never be able to spend a nite there - which really is ok, as if i had my choice i'll take a cruise over anything ! so this is the next best thing ... enjoy the shops, restaurants, the casino... but how do you get from the boat to town? to atlantis? are there taxis there for us to take ? can we trust them ? how much does it usually cost ? u.s. dollars or their money ? can i depend on a taxi getting back to ship? we would be coming back to ship early evening - we are not all nighters ! haha would it be safe to walk, providing it's possible ? i don't know yet if there is a carnival sponsored shuttle or not - there might be - but if i don't want to conform to their hours, etc., the we may be on our own. but the safety is the utmost importance here.

so, any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Pam and Amber,
You can take a taxi over there and also there are water taxi (cost $4) which drops you off right by the pier. When you take the water taxi over, there is a few block walk, but nothing too terrible and there will most likely be others walking over there as well. You may also want to check into a cruise excersion that includes Atlantis too. We did a harbor tour which included Atlantis and it was well worth the $25 to see it, don't miss it.

thank you ! i thought surely some others would be going there also ! and i'm not afraid to ask questions ! but - safety is the most important... we are very excited - i have been on a cruise, and in march the four of us (daughter and husband) are going on carnival's new pride boat to eastern carib ! really looking forward to that also ! then in may my girlfriend and i are taking a long weekend cruise to bahamas. that will be it until next spring of 2003 ! haha

Yes, you are so right about safety. I felt pretty safe in Nassau and a lot of other cruisers will be going over as well, so they say safety in numbers, right? I am sure you will enjoy seeing the grounds there too, what a place, have fun!

I just took the 4 day Fantasy cruise on 10/14/01 and had a great time. In Nassau it's a pretty good distance down the pier to the taxi's. The pier is secure to only the cruise passengers. You have to have your sail and sign card to get onto the pier so you are safe there. I wouldn't recommend walking to the Atlantis, it's pretty far. We took a taxi (there were 5 of us) with a few other cruise passengers in a van and it was about 5.00 pp in US dollars. Their currency is equal in value to our so it's interchangable. You'll love the Atlantis, make sure you go to the digs, it's incredible. Be prepared for alot of walking though. When you are ready to go back to the ship there are taxi's waiting outside the Atlantis to take you back to the pier. Please email me directly if you have any questions, this is my favorite topic!
