Default Late Arrival in San Juan

We are thinking of taking the Eastern Caribbean in December. I see from the itinerary that we get to San Suan at 5 pm and leave at midnight. Any suggestions on what can be done there during that period of time? Are the shops closed?
Thanks.

Hi Karin,
By the time you actually get to the port it will be dinner time and after checking in, finding your cabin, it will most likely be on the late site to venture our again. If you do, you can always go to the Wynham in Old San Juan, depending on what port your ship is at and check our their casino. I personally wouldn't wonder around after dark there or anywhere to be on the safe side, but this hotel is right across the street from one of the main piers they use in San Juan.

Have also cruised out of some other piers where there is nothing right there, you'd need to grab a cab to go anywhere. Also I think once you finally do get onboard, you would rather take a look around the ship while you wait for your luggage to show up, get something to eat and they will be having their shows, so there will be lots to do.

Have Fun!

Thanks Donna. We'll actually be on our third day cruising whe we get to San Juan. Sorry I wasn't more clear. My kids have always wanted to go to Puerto Rico, but I'm wondering what we can do. I suppose take a taxi/sight seeing excursion?? Karin

That itinerary does not really allow you very much touring time unfortunately. San Juan is a wonderful historic port. The shops close between 5 and 6 p.m. Of course, it will be getting dark, too. If there were a ship's tour that took you around to see the "sights by lights" and include the hotels, that is all I could recommend for you and your child. I would look for a better itinerary. A cruise that departs/sails out of San Juan at 11 p.m. at night is always great if you embark mid-day, then you can do a walking tour of the forts and old historic buildings.

Hi Karin,
You can walk up to the old fort "El MOrro" and check that out, always neat for the kids to see and the view from there is something else too. Very easy to walk, just grab a map before you get off the ship, also lots of nice shops to see :-)

We did the Eastern Carib trip in February and arrived in San Juan a little earlier than slated, around 4:00pm - about time we got off the ship and were able to board our bus for the city and shopping tour, it was closer to 5:30pm. We were taken on a great but quick tour of San Juan and then Old San Juan - we stopped at the old fort which was perfect because the sun was just setting and it was magical... but the fort was closed and there wasn't enough time to see anything. About time we got back to Old San Juan for the shopping hour - it was very late and most of the shops were closed except for the t-shirt cheeky type stores. I found the culture much more appealing- the streets were filled with locals and it was nice to see and hear the locals active in the cobble stone streets of old san juan.

It would be great if Carnival could arrange to get into San Juan around noon or a little earlier - then leave out at 10pm or so for the next port....
