The only thing you can really get at the bar for free is water. You can also get coffee, tea, punch, juice and water at the beverage stations located on the Lido deck. The bars are basically for alcoholic and soft drinks only.

Hi. We were on the Spirit 6/12-6/19 you can get soft drinks anytime, and the tip (15%) is added.(every kind of drink available free on Lido deck, fresh juice etc etc.but not soft drinks) Best to get a card if you drink a lot of soft drinks, or better yet buy them when you get off at different ports, didnt seem to be a problem. Have your Steward empty out mini bar (refridgerator in room) and you can refridg. however you can have all the ice you want. You can also take wine (or a bottle of whatever) on when you board. Liquor can be purchased at a very good price on board, however you cant take it to your cabin, til day before leaving cruise(they will deliver to you cabin) I hope this info helps. Wonderful ship, have a great cruise. YM
On the Carnival Spirit, the Lido Deck (La Playa Grille) has free iced tea, water, and juices 24/7 self-serve, so no tipping. It's a short trip from anywhere you'll be with their incredibly speedy elevators. Even a club soda or mineral water at the bar is pay, and gratuities are included automatically. Self-serve is the way to go. You can get as many as you want and carry them around.
We had two cocktail parties with everything from the bar free (go to Club Cool near the Fountain Cafe to order without the standard cocktail waitress tray) and one past-cruisers party courtesy of my cabin-mate that we didn't attend.
