Default miami to key west

My wife and I are sailing on the Paradise on 9/22 out of Miami. We are driving down to Key West for a couple of days after we get of the ship. Mapquest says Key West is 165 miles from Miami but they estimate the driving time to be 5+ hours. Has anybody done this drive or know why it takes so long to drive that distance? It seems it would be all highway and should only take 2 to 3 hours.

Joe,
While it is all highway, it isn't Interstate. Most of it is two or four lanes max and there are stoplights and small communities to go through that have 25mph speed limits. This is really not meant to be a quick drive, rather an adventure through some very pretty and quaint islands connected by numerous bridges, some of which are very long. Think 'Sunday Drive' of many years ago. <G>

Jim is right. It's a much longer drive than it looks on the map, but that's half the adventure! You'll enjoy it, it's very scenic and you'll pass lots of quirky places.

The way to navigate around the Keys is by mile markers. Here's a taste of what you'll encounter:

We've driven it twice, and it is only about 3 hours. It's mostly a 2 lane road and hope that there hasn't been an accident. It is one of the most beautiful drives I've ever been on. Keep the camera out and handy to stop and take pictures.
