I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on a "must see" in either Belize City, Cozumel, or Progresso. This is my first time on a cruise and don't want to waste too much time wandering aimlessly at our ports of call. Thank you for any suggestions.
Belize - Cave Tubing was a blast if you are in decent physical shape. Your adventure begins with a 40 minute walk thourgh the jungle carrying your innertube. They provide life jackets if you would like to wear one in the water.
Cozumel - Horse back riding was really fun, the ranch we went to (not sure the of name but it was a tour though carnival) was beautiful the horses were well trained.
Progresso - under-developed area would suggest an excusion if you plan on getting off the ship. SInce this a new port there is no dock yet. We went kayaking (spelling?) would not recommend. The water was brown and smelled horrible.
In Belize, we went on the cave tubing, it was great! It also allows you to get a bus ride throught the country and town. I would not recommend going into the city unless you are with a group or tour. It is very depressing and poor- with not much to do. The guided tours are your best bet.
In Progresso/Merida, we went to Chichen Itza (mayan ruins) that was very interesting. This is also a long bus ride (@2 hours one way), but again, worth the time and money. These ports are new for the cruise lines and do not offer much shopping. The beaches are marginal.
If you are going to Cozumel, you can shop there and find time to snorkel as well. We had a great time on the Pride this year! Going again in May (eastern carribean)
We had a great time snorkling in Cozmel, we took one of Carnival's shore excursion's to do so. Otherwise just shopped and ate at a wonderful mexican restaurant. I hear that renting a jeep and doing a self guided tour is the way to go on cozmel...
