sick of non-smokers complaining!!

i know we are a dwindling breed, but iam so sick and tired of non-smokers complaining about the smell amd this and that... look i understand you don't smoke and may not appreciate the smell, but we are already forced to one side of a ship, no smoking in all dining areas... what else do you want ???? why don't you write to the companies and ask for them to provide non-smoking floors on the ship or something?? or sail on the paradise, which i believe is totally a non smoking ship.. my husband does not smoke, so i consider myself a courteous smoker, i always try to stay away from everyone while smoking, i only ever smoked on my balcony, not in our room, but, i feel we have rights too!!! please try and se our side too!!

Re: sick of non-smokers complaining!!

My granddaughter has asthma. So even if someone is across the room, the smoke still bothers her. My husband is a smoker too. He goes to the garage or outside to smoke, but that still bothers her. Did you ever consider that someone may be allergic, not just looking for something to camplain about?

Re: sick of non-smokers complaining!!

Smokers certainly do have the right to smoke onboard.

If the smoking lounges were confined, as they are in land based restaurants, and on most cruise ships, then the odor of smoke wouldn't infiltrate the hallways and cabins, and wouldn't bother those of us who have sensitivites to smoke. Then, we could all peacefully co-exist together.

Re: sick of non-smokers complaining!!

Wow, if it's that much of a pain I'm really glad I quit smoking a few months ago. But, I understand how you feel luvlelady. Never had to deal with it on a ship but it's definitely more difficult now than ever before to find a place to smoke. I too tried to be a considerate smoker but it seems that it simply isn't acceptable anymore and people just won't tolerate it the way they used to.
I feel your pain, I hope the next one works out better.

Re: sick of non-smokers complaining!!

Hmm..lovlelady - I am not sure that was the best approach to pleading your case. Berading us non smokers for "forcing" you to smoke in certain areas is not going to win you any fans, I'm afraid.
You DO have every right to smoke on the ship, but we also have the right to say that we dont like it. The Paradise WAS a non-smoking ship, but will be changed in the near future. Furthermore, I dont believe that we should be banished to ONE ship out of god knows how many in order to escape the smell of smoke. How can you possibly think that is an acceptable alternative?
Every smoker I know understands and respects the fact that non-smokers and even many smokers do not like the smell while eating, so I hope you can understand why smoking is banned in the dinning room.
I do think that Carnival should have no smoking floors on every ship, but for logistic reasons, this is fairly impossible.
There are plenty of places you are allowed to smoke and a few you are not...I'm not sure who this post was aimed at, but I believe your rights as a smoker are more than accomodated on Carnival ships.

Re: sick of non-smokers complaining!!

i am not saying that non smokers should not have rights.. but as stated in one reply.. i wish there was a way for all to be happy... i don't smoke in my house either, i always go outside at friends houses, even if they say it's okay to smoke inside! i just think the ships should be more accomodating to all needs of all passengers!! i agree there should not be smoking in the dining areas, or the confined spaces, i was stating that i was tired of hearing non-smokers complain about the smell!! i don't eat any seafood and the smell makes me sick to my stomach, but i don't complain if someone near us orders it, i just deal!! as for medical conditions that are aggrevated by it, i am sorry!! but , as i stated, i try to be courteous, and truly if someone came up to me and told me that they were bothered by it i would put it out!!

We non smokers are ever so sorry that we force our health needs upon you! How dare we push you over to another part of a restaurant or even out of it because of our little health concerns. It's not like 2nd hand smoke causes 3,000 lung cancer deaths in nonsmoking adults. Or that it can cause other respiratory problems in nonsmokers. I mean what are we all complaining about. We all need to just shut up and breathe in the Carcinogens!

Re: sick of non-smokers complaining!!

Well, luvelady, as you can see by my signature, my hubby & I have been cruising the Paradise almost exclusively, because we do not like the smell of cigarette smoke. And I think it's a terrible unfortunate tragedy that the Paradise, after September, is going to be just like every other smelly, stinky cruise ship that has smoke lingering about.

It's nothing personal, I have many friends who smoke, but I still do not like the smell of their hair & clothes when I spend time with them. Even smoking outside doesn't help that.

My husband finally quit smoking, and we're all so glad! I wish there were no such things as cigarettes, although I can appreciate the difficulty of quitting, and I admire those who do.

This is just going to be an on-going difficult subject w/everyone...

Re: sick of non-smokers complaining!!

Hey, if you feel good about paying big business and the government to kill you slowly on a daily basis so they can continue to make $$ off you until you die, until they can talk some child into smoking to take your place, go ahead. I personally have a moral issue with that, and don't have it in my heart to expose my child and other peoples' children and loved ones to a product known to cause cancer. That's why I quit. Why would drugs, which I am in no way condoning, be illegal, but alcohol and cigs are still legal, when they cause just as much, if not more damage than these other substances? Because the government is making $$ off of it. In EXCHANGE FOR YOUR LIFE, I might add. Enjoy your cigarette! You won't hear me complain about it. It's your life. Now if I let my flatulent husband hang around you, I don't want to hear you complain about the smell either, OKAY?!

Re: Re: sick of non-smokers complaining!!

I hope I don't offend anyone here because that is not how I am. My mom smokes...my dad smoked...died of smoking related heart attack at the age of 61...My sister-in law smoked...died of lung cancer at age 44... one aunt and two uncles...heart attack and lung cancer... I am very afraid of 2nd hand smoke. Smokers have their rights...I just wish they would think of not only others health...but their own. It is very painful watching your loved ones die so early because they smoke. My granddaughters loved my sister-in law so much...one was 7 when she died and still cries over her at the age of 13.
Actually, I don't mind the smell, I grew up with it. I just don't want to die of lung cancer or a heart attack when I have never raised a cigarette to my mouth.

wishing good health to all,
Cruzn

Wow luvlelady you brought up a good one huh!!!
I am with the majority of the posts here I do not smoke never have never will ..I do feel It is your right !!BUT I also have a son with asthma have you ever had the feeling you cant breathe????He has and its been cigerette induced if we dont have his puffer right there then he has an attack and he only has mild asthma!!I cant imagine the people withmore serious cases and how they may feel.Im sorry that you are tired of us complainers but I am also tired of the smokers that complain about no were to smoke. We shouldnt have to be in a room filled with smoke!!!Do you mind those stinky cigars? I just believe you should be confined to an area where its not going to bother those of us that choose to live longer..I work in the ICU dept of the hospital here in my town and I have seen things that may give you a wake up call and youd never smoke again..People beg for there lives back and end up dying I feel for those that are too addicted to quit. But all around youd be alot better off quiting. Last but not least I know that you cant smell yourself when you smoke but It really smells bad Im not sure if you realize that but its awful your hair,clothes,breath,hands...
AND those of us that have to sleep in cabins right after a couple of hard core smokers smokin for 7 days is disgusting.Thank you for being one of the few considerate smokers but there are not alot of you out there..............................SHELLY

Re: sick of non-smokers complaining!!

Hubby and I neither one smoke, but believe in smoker's rights.

However! (you had to know there'd be one, right? *L*) I also have the right to complain about the smell. Actually, I have the right to complain about anything that bothers me...its called freedom of speech. Mind you, I also realize that with the freedom to complain I have to accept the consequences if I am a constant complainer. Generally speaking, people don't like constant complainers. So, because I like to make and keep friends, I don't always complain. But once in a while a comment will sneak out (right after my *cough*cough*cough*). Come on, people, you want me to ignore your cigarettes, you can ignore my occassional whine!

Re: sick of non-smokers complaining!!

WOW!!!! i didn't realize i would cause such a controversy for just saying that i was tired of hearing people complain about the smell!!! i know it's bad for my health,( and those around me, thats why i don't smoke indoors!!) but, it truly is very difficult to quit( have tried very hard at least 6 times) i just meant that i was tired of reading soo many reviews that say the ships smell of smoke...i was trying , not to take away anyones right to their opinion, or impose my opinion on them, but, the places on board that do allow smoking, and if you don't like it, stay out of those bars or lounges! there are plenty of places to go that are smoke free.

i think if those of you who complain about the smell( not the health issues) should write to the cruise companies to try to make more pleasant accomodations for those of you who do not smoke!!! i agree that you have the right not to be around second hand smoke!!! if hotels can offer non-smoking rooms, why can't the ships!! this way we could all enjoy our cruising experiences without infringing on anyone's rights!!!

and by the way, why is the paradise changing it's non-smoking ship policy????

ljrfrm July 6th, 2004 07:46 PM

Re: Re: sick of non-smokers complaining!!

My TA told me the Paradise is changing because cruise ships make the majority of their money on group cruises...and it's harder to book a group tour on a smoke free ship. For example, a family reunion of 45 people.....Uncle Joe smokes.....therefore, the 45 won't book the Paradise because of the one smoker.....bummer, because it's the perfect compromise for everybody!

I would like to see the cruise lines at least have a couple bars or lounges that are non-smoking. There is no place for us non-smokers to go in the evening and listen to the piano man or to dance to a band without being forced to sit in a haze of nasty offensive smoke.

Then all you have to do is cruise Carnival. Since late in 03, early 04 Carnival has designated certain lounges onboard TOTALLY non smoking. So has Royal Caribbean. There may be others, but these are two lines I have cruised on, and witnessed it myself.

It appears the cruise lines are trying to find a reasonable compromise to the problem.

Re: sick of non-smokers complaining!!

Okay, I've got to chime in here .... I am the only one in my family who doesn't smoke and I can't stand the smell either but I do believe in everyone's right to do what the want as long as it doesn't impact those around them. The difference between smoke and the aroma of food as someone mentioned above is that the smoke gets in our clothes and hair as well so even if we leave the area, we still smell it. We have to shower and change clothes to get away from it. Smokers do not smell this because it is already in their hair, skin, breath and clothes. I have chain-smoking parents and two siblings that smoke almost as much and I've seen the way it has aged them, not to mention the breathing problems.

To those of you trying to quit, I pray you can. For those courteous enough to limit it to smoking outdoors, I thank you.

My best to all ...

Glenn

Just returned from the non-smoking Paradise and believe me, it was the most pleasant cruise ever not having to deal with 2nd hand smoke (both my husband and I are asthmatic). We are hoping Carnival will reconsider doing away with their one and only non-smoking ship, and hope that other cruise lines will adopt the policy.

Re: sick of non-smokers complaining!!

It really comes down to this point:
We can all choose to smoke or not to smoke. Smoking has been proven to be dangerous to health. Those of us who have chosen not to may have done so for health reasons. My grandmother is allergic to tobacco smoke, and I am similar but not as allergic.
Secondhand smoke is real, and it is dangerous. You are able to make the choice, but if you smoke around people who don't smoke, then the nonsmokers can no more choose not to breathe the smoke than they can choose to stop breathing and stop their hearts!
In fact, I'd like it if the casino had nonsmoking areas near the entrance so the smoke does not bother the people on the promenades, or at least very high powered air returns to remove it.
The public health is now the primary concern after safety on cruise ships. if we're doing CDC inspections on food because of minor GI problems, why are they still allowing a potentially lethal habit that affects both those who choose to use it and those who do not?
smokers,
FEEL VERY VERY LUCKY!!!!!

"The public health is now the primary concern after safety on cruise ships. if we're doing CDC inspections on food because of minor GI problems, why are they still allowing a potentially lethal habit that affects both those who choose to use it and those who do not?"

Like I said, they allow it, because they (meaning the government) make too much $$ off it to do anything about it. As far as trying to quit, it's simple. QUIT BUYING THEM. I just thought about my kids healthy pink lungs turning black, and watching my grandfather fight for his last breath. It really wasn't that tough. If you do not have cigs, you can't smoke them. Sure the cravings are rough. But "this too shall pass", and if you don't have that back up pack in the house, you can't cheat.

I do believe in freedom of choice, but when smokers pollute the air, and me and my kids are FORCED to breath that air, what choice do we have? Yes there are smoke free areas, but it is impossible to stay away from the nasty stuff. I guess we should just hold our breath, you know, just to be fair.

I am a smoker and I understand both sides of this.. But the fact of the matter is.. smoking kills.. PERIOD..And non-smokers have every right to complain about smoke.. Us smokers should just be glad that these ships have areas for us to smoke in..

Re: sick of non-smokers complaining!!

Luvlelady...you might have more will power to quit after having your first heart attack or find out you have lung cancer. My grandmother died from smoking her whole life...my mom had her first heart attack at the age of 55. She quit cold turkey! I grew up with it and had problems when I was younger from 2nd hand smoke. This was not my choice.
I have no compassion for smokers who get upset with us non smokers. We are concerned about OUR health. We choose not to smoke for a reason.

There's a town here in our state that banned smoking from all restaurants. The heart attack rate went down 40%! Hhmm...something to think about.

Re: sick of non-smokers complaining!!

I sympathize with the smokers and non-smokers. I've been both of them at some point in my life, and, at this point am the later. Some people the worst complainers are ex-smokers. Not in my case. In fact, after being 14 months since my last puff, I've occasionally been around some smokers, and have encouraged that they blow some of the stuff my way while smoking. I guess it's just a reminder of where I was once upon a time.

Both parties have rights, but rights end when they interfere with someone elses well-being and health.

Nuff said.........

I was with RollerDonna on the June 20th cruise and I am with her, it was really nice on the Paradise. The ship was so nice and we didn't have to worry about smoke and smokers.

Re: sick of non-smokers complaining!!

My personal opinion http://www.cruise-addicts.com/forums/twocents.gif I think ALL cruise ships should be smoke-free, or at least no smoking inside the ship ANYWHERE, cabins, lobby, dining, lounges, casino, etc. Smoking only allowed outdoors on the decks perhaps the back of the ship even. Just my opinion,, first opinion anyway... 2nd, can't even give up smoking for a few days while on vacation?? pathetic. Think of others,,, think of THEIR NEEDS(and yours too of course), you think you NEED those ciggs?, Well correct me if I'm wrong but I think lungs are more a necessity then ciggs. Lungs we NEED to survive>> Ciggs you DON'T NEED to survive. Maybe you don't care about your lungs or care if you survive or not, but think of the people around you, the people on board that same ship you're on and smoking. Respect their needs. Please.

1 more thing- You're sick of the non-smokers complaining about your smoking,, well, feeling is mutal, non-smokers are sick of smokers saying that they are sick of non-smokers complaining,, so there. ha! LOL :-)

Happy Cruising!

Ah ya gotta love yet another thread on "smoking" pitting the righteous against the unrighteous<G>

Automoblile accidents are amongst the leading causes of death in North America. If we could only convince people not to drive them.

Oh well, at least they aren't allowed on ships, so we don't have to argue about them here <G>

Heart disease is again amongst the leading causes of death in North America, and a very significant amount of heart disease is caused by obesity, which is prevelant in North Americans. But no one here better suggest we cut out the buffets...or the real flame wars are going to start <G>

Re: sick of non-smokers complaining!!

Kuki, no offense, I may be 15 but I do know that you can choose to eat healthy. More healthy choices are making their way into cruise line menus as time passes. There was something on CNN today about healthy selections being put into vending machines.
Someone's obesity will not harm those around them, but someone's smoking could.

pg. July 7th, 2004 07:32 PM

Re: sick of non-smokers complaining!!

Yeah what about obesity, buffets are killing us!!!! I've seen 10 yrs olds that gotta weight in at at least 150 lbs. , and momma was still loading their plate! That's diabetes in the making.

Kim, no, a smoker can't just give it up for a few days, that is a statement made by someone who has obviuosly never smoked. If it was easy to quit don't you think people would? I mean really, think about it, most smokers are fully aware of the health risks, and they are fully aware of the exspence, and they are also fully aware that many consider them second hand citizens.
IT IS AN ADDICTION
duh,
I myself am an ex smoker, and don't particularly like the smell in my hair either, nor do I like it in dining rooms or casinos, but honestly some of the non smokers on this board are the hugest whiners ever, they make say things like if someone smokes outside and I have to walk on the deck 1/2 hour later it may cause me to die of lung cancer.! Ha!

There is no smoking in any dining room on any ship( mass market) that I am aware of, almost every ship has some smokefree lounges, and almost everyship has a smoke free showroom. Plus 99% of smokers are very aware nowadays and very considerate!

No one should have to breathe second hand smoke, I totally agree, but as for smelling it on someones hair or clothes, well tough , move away from them. Some people wear perfume that is GAGGING me, and some have body odour that could kill a cow.

We all have to share this earth, so head on down to the buffet folks and shovel it in, there is always another way to have a heart attack after you quit smoking!
