Default Have it hand inspected

When you get to the security gate, have it ready and give to one of the secuity people and ask them to inspect it by hand instead of through the new machines.

They may not be able to do it by hand, new guidelines require them to put everything through the machine. Film should be ok unless its over 800 speed or video tapes. Just insist that they check them by hand and if they wanna put them through the machine then say you wanna see a superior and make stand and then more than likely he will inspect it by hand.

Request a hand check! My mom had 3 rolls of 400 speed film ruined by the carry-on x-ray machines at the airport, so much for your vacation pics.

They are required to do a hand inspection of film if you ask. You can go to www.tsa.gov and print off the law that requires them too. Make sure you take the film of the canisters and put it in a clear ziplock bag to make it faster and easier.

this may seem like a silly question - but do you need to do this with film that hasn't been used yet?

Yes you do need to request a hand check for all film, used or not. It can cause weird fuzzy pictures or nothing at all to come out on the film.
