Default about credit cards

At the end of the cruise can you pay what you owe on your Sail and Sign acct. with a credit card of does it have to be cash or traveler's checks? How about shore excursions? And, do merchants in San Juan or St. Thomas take credit cards or do you have to use cash or traveler's checks?
Thank you

Credit Card!!!!

Do you think Puerto Rico and St Thomas (both USA) are third world countries?!? Of course, everyone takes credit cards.

They will actually just close out your account by charging your credit card unless you tell them otherwise. It's simpler that way- no paperwork for you!

What is the best way to pay for purchases in Mexico? We are going to be in Cozumel and Playa del Carmen.

Depends on what you are buying and where. It is best to have small bills for some purchases but make sure you use credit cards for jewelry and larger purchases.

I always take small bills when going to MX. Some of the stores will take credit cards but we don't shop at those places in MX. We like going to the mercados (flea markets) and bargain for goods. The majority of the shops there are same as in the other ports. I'm talking about your "recommended" shops. Do be careful however buying silver esp. We have had some bad pieces and these were stamped with the .925. For jewelry I would go to the recommended stores because of the guarentee.

What if you do want to pay your sail and sign card with traveller's cheques? Can you do this? My goal is try not to use my credit card unless necessary. Will take a bit of cash (small bills), and traveller's cheques. HOping to be able to pay for all I need with that. If you're going to pay cash, do you have to put money down on your sail and sign card - this is fine with me, as long as there is some way to track your spending. Is there a way to track your expenses as you go along? thanks.

You of couse can pay your bill in any fashion you so desire but really, your CC is the best as you are using someone elses dollar for free if you pay it off right away as well as establishing good credit, having ability to dispute any erronous charges, etc. Just make sure you pay it off entirely right away.

Readytogo, if you use cash I believe they want $100 pp down. If you go over they will send you a notice. At the end of the cruise you either pay up or get a refund based on your spending. You will get a receipt for everything so you can compare to the printout they will provide you with. I believe the travelers cheques are fine as payment. Hope this answers your questions and happy sailing!

If you want to pay off the S&S card with cash or travelers checks but want to avoid standing in a really long line to set up a cash only account you can set up the account with your credit card and just pay off the balance with your travelers checks before the end of the cruise. Your card is only charged once at the end of the cruise, so if you don't have a balance nothing will hit your credit card.

We bring along enough cash to get us on to the ship (taxis, tips, ect) and then cash travelers checks at the pursers desk along the way for small spending money in the ports (we generally don't buy anything but small souviners in the ports so cash is necessary). Then everything else, including S&S card stays on the credit card so we get the frequent flyer points (next cruise has free airfare because of those FF points).
